Well, I did the manual install route, due to having a mobo with the VIA chip set with IDE DMA problem.
--If there is a workaround for this DMA problem I welcome hearing about it.

As I'm not aware of one, can't return the mobo, and can't live with hangs nor choppy non-DMA streaming video, I cleverly decided to remove on-board IDE from the equation. I booted from a USB CD-rom (PCI IDe controller can't boot form CD), though the boot process stops from USB and resumes from the IDE CD-rom once Linux kernel takes over (I put twin CD's in onboard and USB CD-ROM drives--a kludge but it works).

DId manual installl--created partitions, copied the config file, changed the /dev/hda references to /dev/hde. I had a problem getting swap recognized, though I figure I can fix that once the rest is operational.

Unfortunately, though it claims it installed on /dev/hde1, knoppmyth does not boot. LILO has a problem. I get the message: LinuxEGDB is big Kernel setup stack overlaps LILO second stage. WHat doe sthat mean? IS there a fix?

I want to use Knoppmyth, but may fall back to MythTV on a standard linux install.
--Any suggestions on the most mature, pain-free solution that way are appreciated as well

A)Now hat KnoppMyth is on hde, it won't boot?
B)Other KnoppMyth, what is the best way to install Linux/MythTV?
If A, I assuming you're using a PCI IDE controller. Yes or no. If yes, you have to set your BIOS to boot from that controller. In some BIOS, the way to do this is to tell it to boot from SCSI.

If B, it doesn't belong in KnoppMyth-Installation.

I was trying to save myself some effort. If no one had good advice on fixinf LILO to help me boot from /dev/hde1, I wanted advice on alternatives ways to get to a MythTV system. That said, I got it working--sort of.
My LILO problem is fixed.

First I did an apt-get install lilo, It also seems that I had some weird lines in my /etc/lilo.conf from the manual install, including a line at the start of file:
part: /dev/hde3

I removed the line, changed my boot from hda to hde and reran lilo. It booted fine from /dev/hde.

FYI it was never a hardware config issue--I should have been clearer. The box was clearly trying to boot from the IDE 1 master on my PCI card--lilo just couldn't get past the bootstrap.

Now I just need to get sound working--I have AC97 sound on the mobo, and a PVR 250. I'm sure it's a prob with the AC97 driver--videos nor tv have sound. I ran alsa_init, which completed, rebooted re-ran the setup, buit no sound so far. It was working fine with the old config that crashed due to the IDE DMA problems, so I know I can get there. I'll read the forum stuff on Alsa and AC97...

if it was working and now it's not I would check to see if the pci ide card is sharing an interupt with the sound.

Well, installing a PCI IDE controller did not seem to help--it still locked up after recording while displaying a show.

Shouldn't an external IDE controller have worked? Could a possible shared interrupt be the cause? The USB controller does in fact seem to be sharing IRQ 15. Maybe I should deconflict in BIOS before giving up... (I disabled serial and LPT--I don't know why those IRQ's aren't available?)
