autoinstall only works on primary master ide. If you are installing anywhere else you have to use manual, and some hacks. see the installation instructions.

Even if you don't want the drive to end up as the primary master some cable swapping to get through the install may make life easier. After which you can tweak you lilo.conf (and don't forget to run lilo!) to match whatever you swap it back to... YMMV...

if you are going to move the drive install then move it back you will also need to pay some attention to /etc/fstab

I'm also having problems with auto installation. First a comment on the original post. If I read his message correctly he was using the first ide drive. Doesn't knoppix force everything to be scsi? notice the ide-scsi:hda part and all the (hda) messages. It has some scsi messages but mentions hda serveral times as well.
Quote: ide-scsi:hda: unsupported command in request queue(0) end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 0 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 2 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 4 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 6
Anyway, I'm having a different problem with auto-install. For some reason the machine keeps locking up around 50% - 60% of the copying files part of the install. Just hard core locks the system. The keyboard lights are blinking and nothing but hitting the reset button changes the state of the computer.
The drive doesn't appear to be full or anything. hda1 is at 40% full, and both hda3 and hda4 are at 1%.
I've used this knoppmyth cd on a different piece of hardware and it worked great, so I don't think I have a bad ISO burn. Not sure what to try next. I pulled it off the net on 8/22/04, so I'm pretty sure it's R4V4.
Is there someway to get it to pick up where it left off, or is there some way I can manually finish the install?
thanks,

A number of folks have had trouble with this. Go into you bios setup and turn off screen blanking, powersaving, ... anything like that. The copy of the CD image to the hard drive takes a long time and I suspect that what is really happening is that some interupt/power saving mode is being activated at an awkward moment. This is particularly common on nforce2 motherboards. Hitting the shift key periodically to provide "user" activity may help too.
I'm going to go look at my BIOS right now to look up the particular setting that I remember being the root cause of this and other lock ups... My machine was flakey as hell until a BIOS update changed the default for one Athlon low power mode setting and since then it's been rock steady.

nope no way to manually finish the install that I know of, but if the install never finished shouldn't be a big deal. the install is not that long. First thing to try would be to disconnnect the cable from the NIC(probably won't work) then if you can remove the NIC or disable it in the bios. Then the install should finish. Or the other thing that sometimes causes the blinking lights is using a USB keyboard. If you are using USB keyboard try a PS/2 one.

OK, the BIOS setting I was looking for is called "C1 Disconnect", a rather innocent sounding and obscure name... It's APIC related, and if memory serves, what it controls is the way parts of the system are put into low power mode independantly, so that despite the heavy disk activity, the CPU core may be dozing off like a narcoleptic. I'm sure that the whole story involves some kind of deadlock, livelock, race condition, etc., ... in conjunction with this and I'm not clear on the details anymore. It would also explain why periodicaly hitting the shift key works since servicing the keyboard interupt would keep the CPU out of that state.
In any case, make sure that C1 Disconnect is disabled and try the autoinstall again. You may also want to look at your ACPI suspend type...

I suspectd it was a "hibernating" type problem, so I've already tried futzing with the system during the install, to keep it from sleeping. No difference. I'll look at my power saving features again. This is an old HP Vectra VLI8, which is a PIII 550 MHz, so I doubt it even supports ACIP, but I can check all that again.
I'll also try pulling the NIC out of the box (I'm assuming you mean the network interface card), and seeing if that makes a difference. Worst Case Scenerio, I'll just put the hard drive back in the other box where it was successfull and try moving it back from there.
Thanks for the help.

I couldn't get it to install correctly, so I moved the hard drive and the KnoppMyth CD to my other box, and it auto-installed like a champ. When It was ready to reboot, I just shut the system down and moved the hard drive back to the system I wanted it in. I had a few minor problems with LILO not getting installed in the MBR and the boot flag wasn't set on /dev/hda1, but after I resolved that it booted right up.
However, now my system doesn't seem to be able to correctly load the ivtv modules. Here's what I get in dmesg output:
Code: ivtv: version 0.1.9 (release) loading ivtv: SGarray_size = 320, DSGarray_size = 16 ivtv: Found an unknown chip, treating it like an iTVC15 PCI: Enabling device 00:10.0 (0110 -> 0112) PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:10.0 PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:06.0 ivtv: Bus Mastering is not enabled ivtv: Error -6 on init2c-core.o: driver unregistered: i2c msp3400 driver i2c-core.o: driver unregistered: saa7115 i2c-core.o: driver unregistered: i2c TV tuner driver i2c-core.o: i2c core module version 2.6.1 (20010830) i2c-algo-bit.o: i2c bit algorithm module i2c-core.o: driver i2c TV tuner driver registered. i2c-core.o: driver saa7115 registered. i2c-core.o: driver i2c msp3400 driver registered. ivtv: version 0.1.9 (release) loading ivtv: SGarray_size = 320, DSGarray_size = 16 ivtv: Found an unknown chip, treating it like an iTVC15 PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:10.0 PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:06.0 ivtv: Bus Mastering is not enabled ivtv: Error -6 on init ivtv: Error detecting PCI card
This repeats itself several times in dmesg output. lsmod says ivtv isn't loaded and when I try to load it I get: Code: modprobe ivtv Warning: ignoring ivtv-debug=1, no such parameter in this module /lib/modules/2.4.25-chw/kernel/drivers/media/video/ivtv.o: init_module: No such device Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg /lib/modules/2.4.25-chw/kernel/drivers/media/video/ivtv.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.25-chw/kernel/drivers/media/video/ivtv.o failed /lib/modules/2.4.25-chw/kernel/drivers/media/video/ivtv.o: insmod ivtv failed
I downloaded the ivtv software, untar-ed /usr/src/linux-2.4.25-chw.tar.bz2 to /usr/src/linux-2.4.25-chw (which is where /lib/modules/2.4.25-chw/build points too). I untar-ed ivtv and did a make; make install. Still got the above messages when I tried a "modprobe". Any ideas?
Thanks,

which ivtv code did you download? if you have one of the newer cards you have to download one of the newer patchsets.

I'm not exactly sure where I got it. It's a 0.1.9 release. I have an AverMedia M179 that I bought last November, so it's not that new. I've seen it work with the KnoppMyth V4R4, so I'm assuming it doesn't need to be all that new of a revision of ivtv.
Perhaps you can recomend a link?
Thanks,

Much closer now. I set the "master bit" on or something like that in the BIOS for the PCI slot that my card is in. now I get stuff like:

I'm not sure exactly what your problem is, but I also have the AverMedia m179 card. I had to play around with several different versions of ivtv to get mine working right. I ended up using ivtv-0.1.10-pre2-ck100z. Now everything works fine. If you haven't got yours working yet, you might want to give that a try.
