I apologize since this is not related directly to KM, but probably more to Knoppix. Anyway, I must do this in order to get the correct driver support for the Via Cle266 drivers with DRI.

I'm trying to build XFree86 3.3.99.12. Getting an error in make install :

"/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lfl
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[3]: *** [pswrap] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/tmp/xc/config/pswrap'
make[2]: *** [install] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory `/tmp/xc/config'
make[1]: *** [install] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/xc'
make: *** [install] Error 2

I know the "cannot find -lfl" is related to flex. Not sure if flex is installed in the KM package?
Other error I'm assuming are related to the first ?
Let me know if I should go to the XFree list.

I don't think flex is installed. The errors are most likely related to it not being installed.
apt-cache search flex
apt-get install flex(libflex or flex-dev) whatever it maybe...

Did you manage to get Xfree86 built with driver support for the VIA CLE266?

I need to do this for my M1000 and was wondering if you have any instructions that may help me with this.

Jay, yes and still somewhat slightly short. I believe the most (open source) via_drv.o requires 4.3.99.902 (or cvs for short ).
I'm not sure if you went with Via's binaries for the modules and their version of via_drv.o? Anyway here is what I've been following:

On ivor's page regarding xfree you should go the links (forget the item numbers) on the xfree bugzilla. You'll see that there are some xfree pieces that sill need some fixin'.

When you are ready to apply the patch use the one's from thomas (shipmail.org) I had some problems following Ivor's patch order and even afer he corrected them there were still some issues. Anyway if you just install the binary you;ll be making your life a whole lot easier.

This link I believe talks about a patch(es) that has been incorporated into Myth cvs. I'm holding off till I rebuild Myth for native alsa and lirc support.

My system is Redhat 9.0 and after trying to work with the Via binaries, I ran into some confusing issues (particularly with makes on ivtv) that made me go with the option to use a new kernel (2.4.23). If you can believe that a new kernel is less confusing .

I've finally got Myth working (still haven't tested any dvd's) there are still some issues which you'll read about in the those arena threads. One being, when you hit "watch live tv" it starts out with some green vertical bars and then everything is normal. The other is a "greenish" layer of sorts. I'm still not sure that it's Via related or not, though some Via users may believe so, I've seen others on the myth list experiencing similar. Still investigating that one.

All in all I have to say things are looking pretty good and worth the effort.

well the issue that you would probably run into trying to use the binaries with knoppmyth is that they were compiled for redhat and knoppmyth is based of debian. not that there is too much difference it's all the linux kernel, but which one etc. and then you would probably have to force the load, blah, blah, blah ...

Ooops on me. I haven't been in the knoppmyth loop for a few weeks. Yeah the binaries won't work even forced into Debian. Very strick with specific kernels , the ones that came with the distribution.

By using the via_drv.o found on the http://www.shipmail.org/~thomas/via/ I've managed to get Mythtv working on my M1000 using software video playback.

On this website it is described how to get hardware mpeg playback to work by downloading the 2.4.23 vanilla kernel and applying the -epia kernel patch, If I do this, will it screw up anything in Knoppmyth? If so is their another way of doing this?

well it won't neccesarly screw anything up, but you will have to recompile any nonstandard kernel modules. That means anything not in the stock kernel which would include lirc, ivtv, and alsa, I may be missing some too. It doesn't mess anything up to compile a custom kernel it is rather just a pain.
