Have been trying to get KnoppMyth to work with all of my hardware. Until I get it all going, I need my system to be dual boot. I bought a dedicated drive for KnoppMyth, disconnected all the other hard drives to set Knoppix up on hda and use the auto install script. Using the instructions and excellent tips from this bulletin board, I managed to get everything to work except for the TV-out and the tuner card's sound.

Then I moved the drive to slave on the primary channel, booted Linux using the KnoppMyth CD and attempted to edit LILO.conf so that the Knoppix partition would wind up as hda (used

disk= /dev/hdb
bios = 0x80
...
root=/dev/hda1 # hoping this refers to primary IDE's slave drive at boot time)

to tell the system to logically swap the drives. I wrote the new boot loader to MBR on hdb (boot=/dev/hdb). I'm sure it went to the slave's MBR because the W98 bootloader was not wiped out, and LILO started when I had the BIOS boot from hd1 (instead of hd0). But my lilo config. didn't successfully boot KnoppMyth--I eventually got an error message about initrd not being available.

I think I also needed to set some of the Knoppix partitions' flage to "Active". Can anyone tell me if I need to do that, and, if I do, will having both drives on the primary channel be active let Windows 98SE continue to boot OK using its own bootloader on the primary master? Or, if anyone can tell me exactly how to write lilo.conf I sure would appreciate it. Maybe I need to have the lilo set which partitions are active at boot time??

P.S. Months ago, I spent hours trying to get MythTv to work under Redhat and really appreciate how easy KnoppMyth was to install--great going! & thanks for making the distro.

It's possible that Lilo, and Linux are under the impression that they should treat the "slave" drive as the master when the bios is set to boot from that drive.

Try restoring Lilo to the original configuration, reset the mbr on the drive, and see if it will act as if hdb is hda when you set the bios to boot from hd1 rather than hd0.

This should probably have been in the linux questions rather than in install.

Thanks for the idea, Rusty.

I originally tried Lilo with the bios to boot from hd1 rather than hd0, and was receiving an error, I believe it was Kernel Panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. That's why I tried changing the lilo.conf So restoring it would leave me where I originally started....

After having no luck with LILO, I found a bootloader called loadlin that managed to boot the hdb1 partition, but its not using the ramdisk. MythTV works, but the tv images drops lots of frames, I'm guess because of that. I also get errors saying one of the ext3 partitions gets mounted as ext2. When I try to add the init= parameter to the loadlin call, it starts to boot then I always get "Kernel Panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel". I have vmlinuz, initrd.gz, and map on the dos partition.

Can anyone tell what I might be doing wrong, or maybe the initrd.gz assumes the linux runs off hda because that was the environment when it was created? Hopefully something simple like copying another file to the dos partition will make it work.

Would really appreciate any ideas you might have.
