Has anyone been able to get this to work? I've patched and rebuilt the kernel with the pdHDTV patch and I can get the drivers to build correctly but when I run "make install" the box locks up when the "modprobe bttv" is issued.

Just curious if anyone has found a solution to this problem. I'm trying to document as much as I can so I can publish a HOW-TO doc for pcHDTV + Knoppmyth.

and I'm totally lost. When I installed the card, it booted up differently and threw me into a config menu with a whole bunch of settings namely:

General:
1) Ip address for mythtv
2) port the server runs on (port the backend runs on ???)
3) port the server shows status on (backend status? frontend status?)
4) Master server IP address (what is this?)
5) Port the master server runs on (what is the difference between server & master server?)
6) Directory to hold recordings (understood)
7) Directory to hold the live-tv buffers (understood)
8) Live TV buffer (GB): 8 (understood)
9) Minimum free Live TV buffer (MB): 50 (understood)
10) Save original files after transcoding [ ]
11) TV Format: (atsc,pal,secam,pal-nc,pal-m,pal-n,ntsc-jp,ntsc)
(ATSC, right?)
12) VBI Format: (NTSC Closed Caption, None, Pal-teletext,)
(NTSC Closed Captioned ? None?)
13) Channel frequence table: (us-bcast,us-cable-hrc,japan-bcast,japan-cable,europe-west,europe-east,italy,newzealand,australia,ireland,france,china-bcast,southafrica,argentina,australia-optus)
(what do I choose here?)
14) Time offset for xmltv listings (auto, -1100 to +1200, in increments of 30)
(what do I choose here?)
15) Master Bckend Override [ ]
(not sure what this is either)
16) idle timeout seconds (0-1200, default 0)
(idle timeout of what?)
17) Max wait for recording (0-120)
(??)
18) Startup before rec (secs): (0-1200
19) Wakeup time format, understood but don't know what this wakeup thing is
20) set wakeuptime command (no clue whta this is for)
21) server halt command (guess this halts the machine, but why you'd wanna do this, I don't know)
22) MasterBackend - Reconnect wait time (0-1200)
23) MasterBackend - Count of reconnect tries (1-60)
24) MasterBackend - Wake Command
25) Wake command for slaves
m
Capture cards:
1) Card type: (Standard V4L Capture card,MJpeg card, mpeg-2 encoder, pchdtv atsc capture card, digital video broadcast (DVB),
I selected PCHDTV of course
2) video device (/dev/video through /dev/video63). How do I know which is the correct one ? The installation instructions for the hd2000 (pchdtv ? or did they send me the wrong card?)
3) vbi device (/dev/vbi through /dev/vbi31)
(what is this???)
4) audio device (still haven't gotten audio working....)
5) audio sampling rate limit: (none,32k, 44100,48000)
What do I choose here ?
6) Default input (what do I type here?)

Video sources
1) Video source name:
(just enter anything, I imagine)
2) XMLTV listings grabber: (North America (xmltv),germany/austria,sweden/norway,UK,uk (alternative),australia,new zealand,finland,spain,holland,denmark,france,japan,
(I chose north america)
3) zip/postal code (I type my zip code - 60645)
provider - (comcat - linconlwood - digital, comcast - lincolnwood, comcast northwest 2 & 3 - chicago - digital, comcast northwest 2 & 3 chicago, comcast sw chicag (1, & 5) - chicago - digital, comcast sw chicago (1,4 & 5) - chicago - digital re..., comcast sw chicago (1, 4 & 5) - chicago, directv chicago-chicago, dish chicago-chicago, rcn cable - chicago, wide open west chicago city - chicgao - cable ready, wideopenwest chicago city - chicago - digital, wideopenwest chicago city - chicago, c-band usa, directv - usa, dish network - usa, voom - usa, local broadcast listings)
I chose local broadcast listings.
4) channel frequency table (default, us-cable,us-bcast, us-cable-hrc, japan-bcast,japan-cable,europe-west, europe-east,italy,newzealand,australia,ireland,france,china-bcast,southafrica,argentina,australia-opus)

Input connections
This is just a blank screen, no questions. What is supposd to be here ?

Channel editor
There are 4 or 5 pages of options.

To make a long story short, what do I need to do to actually watch tv? Assuming I'm in chicago, zip 60645, with a roof antenna.....

When I run through the settings as above and I go to "watch tv", the screen just goes black.

Any idea? I can still ctrl-alt-f1 to a console, but I'm not sure what I have to do.

It seems to me that mythtv has the drivers for this card already...or no? What do I have to do ?

Rob

What you are seeing is the mythtvsetup menu.

Do you have the pcHDTV drivers installed and working?

I don't think so.

How do I tell?

Rob

P.S. Is the device always /dev/dtv ?

You have to patch the kernel, rebuild the kernel and then you can build the drivers. But if you're like me you won't be able to get the drivers to install.

I'll send you what I have of my HOW-TO later on tonight.

I would appreciate whatever docs you have.

If you only have one box it's 127.0.0.1 mythtv run in a frontend backend configuration always. on one box both run on the same box, but you can have the backend on a different computer.
Quote:
5) Port the master server runs on (what is the difference between server & master server?)
this is from the scalable nature of the mythtv architecture. You can run everything on one box or you could have one frontend and one backend or you could have one backend and three frontend, or you could have three backends and 10 frontends. In the last case one of the backends would be the master backend and the other two would be slave backends. Most likely though you only have one box and the setting is 127.0.0.1 or localhost.

9) Minimum free Live TV buffer (MB): 50 (understood)
10) Save original files after transcoding [ ]
if you are doing automatic transcoding from mpeg2 to mpeg4 to save space this setting will tell it to delete the old mpeg2 files and just leave the mpeg4 files.
Quote:
11) TV Format: (atsc,pal,secam,pal-nc,pal-m,pal-n,ntsc-jp,ntsc)
(ATSC, right?)
for a pchdtv card it would be atsc standard television in US would be ntsc, and most of europe would be PAL.
Quote:
12) VBI Format: (NTSC Closed Caption, None, Pal-teletext,)
(NTSC Closed Captioned ? None?)
not sure on this one I don't us close captioning.

(what do I choose here?)
I use us-cable, but I have no idea what it would be for the pchdtv. My guess would be us-bcast
Quote:
14) Time offset for xmltv listings (auto, -1100 to +1200, in increments of 30)

default should work this would be if your the tvlistings are off from your time.
Quote:
15) Master Bckend Override [ ]
(not sure what this is either)
not 100% on this one myself, but for a single box it works on the default.
Quote:
16) idle timeout seconds (0-1200, default 0)
(idle timeout of what?)
not sure, but my box works fine and I've never changed it so default should be fine.
Quote:
17) Max wait for recording (0-120)
(??)
??? never touched it works fine.
Quote:
18) Startup before rec (secs): (0-1200
this allows you to set it to start x secs before the listed time, for instance the show is scheduled to start at 1:00 your recording would start at 12:59 if it is at 60 sec I don't use this because I record so many back to back shows and don't know how it would affect that. Also this setting is also in the setup menu from within mythtv and is more easy to understand there.
Quote:
19) Wakeup time format, understood but don't know what this wakeup thing is
not sure never changed it.
Quote:
20) set wakeuptime command (no clue whta this is for)
not sure here I've never messed with it but I would guess it has something to do with the people who want there box to go to sleep/hibernate while they are not using it. I never liked this even on desktops much less a box that I want to make sure stays up and records.
Quote:
21) server halt command (guess this halts the machine, but why you'd wanna do this, I don't know)
just to take the machine down cleanly I guess. I never use it.
Quote:
22) MasterBackend - Reconnect wait time (0-1200)
23) MasterBackend - Count of reconnect tries (1-60)
24) MasterBackend - Wake Command
25) Wake command for slaves
this is more stuff for the master and slave backends only have to worry about this if you have more than one box with a tuner in it.

the pchdtv instructions should tell you this, if I remember correctly it is /dev/video36 or video37.(but don't quote me on this look it up.)
Quote:
3) vbi device (/dev/vbi through /dev/vbi31)
(what is this???)
this is for the close captioning which I don't use so I don't really know how it works.
Quote:
4) audio device (still haven't gotten audio working....)
5) audio sampling rate limit: (none,32k, 44100,48000)

for pvr and pchdtv cards I don't think this audio setting applies cause the audio stream is muxed into the video stream in hardware on the card for the pvr cards and the pchdtv card just saves the stream to hd and it already contains audio.

I would run mythfrontend from a terminal and see what kind of messages it dumps.

no mythtv does not have drivers for the pchdtv card that setting about pchdtv is just to let it know how to talk to the drivers. You still have to install the pchdtv drivers.

oh and probably the best place to get info for the pchdtv and mythtv is on the pchdtv forums.

Rob, I never had any luck getting the card to work with KnoppMyth. I ended up installing Fedora Core and followed Jarod's guide for setting up myth. One thing you have to do differently though is instead of upgrading to ATrpms kernel in step 6 you want to upgrade to the 2.4.22-1.2174.nptl kernel. The pcHDTV drivers will compile and install without any problems in that kernel.

I followed the exact same logic and (for the most part) gave up on knoppmyth.

I have the card getting singnal from the command line, but on the recompile, I lost my mouse in X *sighs*.

Trying to recompile again and see if that helps.
