Maybe I missed something, but I have not been able to find any good resources on setting up a remote frontend.

I have a set up but am not able to retrieve guide data or watch recordings. The only think I can do is see what recordings are available vie TV -> Watch Recordings. I'm not an expert and dont quite know where to begin.

Cany somebody post a detailed howto on setting up a remote front end using KnoppMyth that outlines everything that needs to be done to the backend and the remote box?

I know there is some informaton on how to do this with just the cd, but I want a permanent install of the frontend.

I think a nice detailed howto on this topic would deserve a sticky somwhere.

Thank you,
SN

OK, have it working 99% now. I just have one hangup...

When I cold boot I get the default purple window manager, nothing seems to start. If I open an exterm and do "mythfrontend" I get an error about not being able to connect to local database...etc..

Wondering why it was trying to open a "local" database I took a look at my /etc/mythv/mysql.txt file to make sure that it was still set to use the backend IP address. It was. I then decided to try to start it up again, and the remote frontend started with no problems. Hmm.

After doing a little more experimenting I found that I can only get it to start if I issue "mythfrontend" from within the "/etc/mythtv" directory.

Just about now I am scratching my head wornding why this will only work if I am in this directory when starting things up.

Anybody know why this is happening or how to correct?

Once I get this all worked out I will post detailed instructions for how to set up a remote frontend as things are a little different for Knoppmyth than the Myth docs describe.

I'd suggest putting mysql.txt in your home directory(~./mythtv/mysql.txt). Things should be no different in KnoppMyth than in the docs. Installing a frontend to hd shouldn't be too difficult:
The backend needs to be configured in the same manner as using the CD for a frontend. Do the install, once it reboots, enter your root password. Once the configuration starts allow it to run. Stop it when mythtv-setup starts, stop mythfilldatabase, exit the frontend. Create a mysql.txt in your home directory. Stop mythbackend and mysql from starting on boot. Start mythfrontend. That should do it(have not done this myself but it should work :) ).

If you don't want to go through the trouble of changing things around, you can just change your mysql.txt to your master backend IP address.

Also, you will need to change your mysql.cnf on your backend to accept outside connections. A search of the forum will show you how.
