Is there any way for it to automatically change the time on the box because of daylight savings?
I thought it would do this since it was set up to know that I'm in the Eastern time zone.

Use NTP, someone has already posted instructions on setting it up.

well use ntp on your box if it works for you, but I had to disable it on mine cause it kept making my recordings cut off the end of every show.

How does that happen?

I'm using ntp without problem. I use a little 'padding' before and after my recordings to account for any network 'foolery' with the schedule.

I haven't played with the record before and after, because I have so many back to back recordings and I'm not sure how it would affect them.

I don't have many back-to-back recordings, so I'm not 100% sure, but I think that it's 'smart' enough to know not to record past the start time of the second program.
