For those following this thread, using a terminal window, you type in "alsamixer" (without quotes). You don't need to be in root (might not work right if you're in root).

Once the alsamixer program is running;
Cursor to each component and toggle it from "MM" (mute) to "OO" on by entering "m".
Use the up arrow to increase the volume... I increased all the volumes until it started to turn red (apparently means distortion).
Use the escape key to quit, which also saves the contents.

By using /dev/dsp for the audio output device, I found that allowed the volume controls my PVR-150 remote to work. A popup on the screen shows the volume changing. Nice!

Now I've got to get it working with the DishNetwork box. The remote doesn't change the settop box stations (even though it's preset to ch 4) in the Myth Input Connections setup.
