I have read that the IVTV driver must be patched for this capture card to work. How do I do that? Where do I get the patch from? How do I install it?

well the nvidia drivers are installed by running install-nvidia.sh as root. As for the m179 if you are using R4V2 it is already patched for the M179.

I installed the Avermedia m179 in my PC. When I turned it on it didn't post. I tried taking out all of my cards except my video card and it still didn't post.

Does anyone have any ideas?

When you sy it didn't post, do you mean the computer did pass the Poer On Self Test? Or do you mean the card isn't "posted". If it does pass the test, remove all cards and reset your BIOS. If that does work...

I mean when I turned the computer on nothing was displayed on the screen.
I don't hear any beeps or anything. The screen is just blank. Another thing
I noticed is when I press the power button to turn the computer off it doesn't
turn off. I must hold the button in for a few seconds then it will turn off.
I took out that card and put the others back in and the computers boots up fine. Does anyone have any ideas?

Try the card in different pci slots. I'm not sure why but some people have had these kinds of problems and they were fixed by getting the card in the right slot. Not that I understand why one slot would be right an anotherone not, but that's what people have reported. Some hints about moving it try not to have it in the first or last slot. Many times these slots share irq with the agp slot.

I have tried putting the card in different slots. That doesn't seem to work.

Does anyone have ideas? I talked to tech support and they think the card may be bad. I am going to try the card in another PC later on today.

Could it be my Power Supply?

I am just guessing here.

It couldn't be the power supply since when you put the other card back in the system is fine. Perhaps the card is bad or not supported by your motherboard.

Check for evil hardware problems.

When I installed a second drive over the weekend the machine didn't want to come back up afterwards and exhibited horrible memory problems. After trying a lot of different things I finally stripped the machine, turned it up side down and "spanked" it. (You could also blow it out with canned air or vacuum it) I ended up with two *tiny* little flakes of aluminum in my lap.

When I put everything back together it worked MUCH better.

Check the card for solder bridges, cruft, physical damage, ... Check and clean the card edge contacts (gently!) with an eraser.

Check the slot to make sure there is no foreign material in it, ...

I installed the Avermedia card in another PC and it did POST.

I updated my BIOS and that didn't help either. I am out of ideas. Does anyone have anymore ideas?

I spoke with tech support and they suggested that the Avermedia m179 card may not be PCI 2.1 compliant. My motherboard uses PCI 2.1. Does anyone think this could be my problem?

Maybe, if the 2.1 spec isn't backwards compatible in some way. Check your BIOS to see if there are any PCI options that look relevant, maybe some compatibility mode or version setting...

I spoke with the avermedia company about the card. They told me that the card should work. I have sent the card back to the company. They are currently during tests to see if the card is bad. I will let you guys know what happens next. This has been an interesting project.
