Hey!

Well, it wasn't pretty. install-alsa-knoppix.bash failed for me. But it did resolve my problem!

The script did make it far enough to recofigure my system. I now see "Restoring alsamixer settings" during the boot process.

To recap -

My Intel 810 motherboard with integrated audio would not save audio settings (alsamixer) upon reboot.

Running Kano's http://kano.mipooh.net/install-alsa-knoppix.bash failed, not recognising the audio device, and locking the machine on a probe.

But it did install enough to get the system to save audio settings.

Thanks for the idea, cesman. And thanks for all your help in other threads as well.

Thanks Kano!

The script actually installs alsactl, which was my first thought on how to fix it.

Does anyone know how to cleanly install alsactl on Knoppmyth? I think that's the best solution, and one I hinted to earlier.

I have a C-Media PCI based sound card (CMI8738-MC6) that was detected on install no problem. However, in order to use the spdif out you have to unmute the IEC958 Output setting. This is no problem in alsamixer. Unfortunately, attempting to use aumix to save or configure my settings did not work. The IEC958 Output setting was not available in aumix to unmute and saving the current setting did not work either. So to resolve the issue I downloaded the alsa-utils (0.9.8 is what I used) and did a ./compile and make. I then copied the alsactl to /usr/sbin. My next step was to modify /etc/init.d/Sound by changing AUMIX=/usr/bin/aumix to AUMIX=/usr/sbin/alsactl and ARGS="-v 70 -l 0 -l R -w 70 -m 0" to ARGS="restore". I then went into alsamixer and set everything up the way I wanted it and ran "alsactl store". Now everything comes up great. Hope this helps some people.
