you have to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, and no xf86config-4 is different case matters. You need to change your horizontal and vertical refresh rates to match your output device. if you are outputting to a tv use horz 30-50 vert 60

I've emailed to Edimax, and fortunately they got drivers for linux,
actually it's a drivers for all RaLink chipset based wireless card.
Here it is:
http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm

Edit:

Here is a whole open source project for RaLink cards:
http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

I think it better be included at the next KnoppMyth, it got a batch list of card that based on these chips.

search the forums for ralink, you are probably going to have to recompile your kernel, as the ralink drivers don't appear to be smp safe at this point.

Thanks for the help Xsercrets...

Ok, here's where I'm at. Let me recap: I loaded R5A16, ejected CD and rebooted, gdm starts and the screen goes black. I then hit CTRL+ALT+F1 and go to the command prompt thing. I successfully loaded the nvidia drivers (7174), and the screen flashes the nvidia logo (on bright white background) and then goes to a black screen.

Now, right after the nvidia logo flashes on the screen and then goes black, my monitor gives a message (same style message your monitor gives when it is not connected to a computer - "check video source" or something) stating "Out of sync", if my memory serves me right. I can go back to the command prompt thing (CTRL+ALT+F1) and the message on monitor goes away.

So, if you could be so kind to help me through this. I think I need to edit the XF86Config-4 file, (like you said earlier), but I really don't know what I am looking for (newb here). Sorry to be a nuisance... Could you tell me what needs to be commented out, uncommented, or added there? Are there many changes to be made?

I owe you. Thanks.

I forgot to mention, I read in some posts that after you install the nvidia drivers, you should go into the XF86Config-4 file and change "nv" to "nvidia". But "nvidia" was already in that file, and no "nv" to change. Does that sound right?

Anyways, I am still stuck. Can't figure out what lines I need to edit to get my Horizontal and Vertical refresh rates correct.

Any more help would be greatly appreciated...

Yes, that is correct. There is a same XF86Config-4 for TV out. Have you read the pamphlet?

how can you not figure it out?

I would have thought that this set of lines would be fairly self explanatory.

HorizSync 30 - 50 # Warning: This may fry old Monitors
VertRefresh 60 # Very conservative. May flicker.

First off, thanks for all the help; even though you sound irritated at my linux level. Remember, I am a newb.

Now if I may, ask a few more questions so I have an idea of exactly what to try when I get home. First off, I am NOT hooking this up to a TV (just yet), I am still trying to configure and get this whole thing working on a monitor first.

Oh, and by the way, I read 'the pamphlet' many many times. It doesn't mention things to change when not hooked to a TV, just what to change (vert, hor rate) when it is hooked to a TV. That is why I am inquiring your knowledge on this. From what I read and gathered from the pamphlet, it is supposed to work after you install the nvidia drivers, if hooked to a monitor.

Now, just a question, in my XF86Config-4 file, I remember seeing the lines you wrote, along with others:

(From my memory)
# HorizSync 30 - 50 # Warning: This may fry old Monitors
HorizSyn 45 -60 # Warning: This may fry very old Monitors
VertRefresh 60 # Warning: Very conservative. May flicker
# VertRefresh 75 # Warning: Very conservative. May flicker

(The numbers may be off, but this is the format it had)

Then after that there is a bunch of lines with something like:

# (Can't remember what it says here)
1280 x 1024 HorizSync 50 VerRefresh 60 24-bit
# (Can't remember what it says here)
1024 x 768 HorizSync 50 VerRefresh 60 24-bit
# (Can't remember what it says here)
800 x 600 HorizSync 85 VerRefresh 70 24-bit
# (Can't remember what it says here)
800 x 600 HorizSync 60 VerRefresh 50 16-bit
...

(Of course the numbers in this example are arbitrary, but the layout should be close)

Now, do I need to adjust anything on this above part? Or just the "may fry your monitor" part? Do I need to 'uncomment' one HorizSync and 'comment out' the other one, or something?

As always, thanks for taking the time (and having patience) for responding and helping me out.

well the reason there is nothing about when connecting to monitors is because the vast majority of monitors work fine with the default settings, if yours doesn't just follow the directions for tv, as that should work with any monitor, it will give you a low resolution, and a slow refresh rate, but it should work. And you shouldn't have to do anything with the modelines unless you are trying to output to an hdtv at hdtv resolutions.

I would suggest reading his tone as "baffled" or "suffering severe cognitive dissonance". ;-)
