The question is does you card support XvMC? Geforce 4 and above... If not then remove the XvMC deb and install another.

dpkg -r mythtv-i686-lirc-xvmc
install-i686-l
/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend restart

broke. I am running a gforce2 GTS so I guess I need to get rig of the xvmc, but when I run the command you gave me, it says they arent installed.:

root@mythtv:/myth/tv# dpkg -r mythtv-i686-lirc-xvmc
dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove mythtv-i686-lirc-xvmc which isn't installed.
root@mythtv:/myth/tv#

I tried doing the other part, installing the correct ones, but :

root@mythtv:/myth/tv# install-i686-l
dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove mythtv-i686 which isn't installed.
(Reading database ... 43245 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking mythtv-i686-lirc (from mythtv-i686-lirc_0.14-1_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing mythtv-i686-lirc_0.14-1_i386.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/mythbackend', which is also in package mythtv-i686-xvmc
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
mythtv-i686-lirc_0.14-1_i386.deb
root@mythtv:/myth/tv#

I can record, and see the video of recordings in the little preview window, but live tv, or playback of a recording through mythtv makes the thing go kablooey

AAAGH!

Thank you for being so patient with me.

If you are using R4V2 then shares for Windows has been configured. You just need to start Samba and have it start on boot.
/etc/init.d/samba start
update-rc.d samba defaults

sweet nice little tidbit you forgot to mention or that I missed when reading the changelog. Anyways I have of course already configured my own samba shares in R4 and upgraded to 0.14, so I won't be upgrading to r4v2, but nice to know when R5 rolls around.
