Post subject:  nForce Instructions Confusion

It's the whole bit about XvMC, nVidia, & install-nvidia.sh. I've got an ASUS a7n8x-vm nForce based mb with a Hauppauge 401 card.
Quote:
If you have an nVidia chipset based card that support XvMC you can install a version compiled for XvMC. However DO NOT install it until after configuration has started and the frontend starts for the first time. Then exit the frontend and pressing <CTRL><ALT><F1>. Login in as root. install-i586-x will install the i586 package with XvMC...

So I did the auto-install, didn't select xvmc support, just lirc. It worked fine straight out of the box. I plan to make a post to the Tier 1 hardware topic. I've watched live tv, setup MythWeather etc... I kind of forgot about going back to do the xvmc thing. I also started tinkering with apt and apt.sources(which may very be the source of my problem).

Now, my first problem. When I go back and try to run install-i686-lx I get error messages:
Quote:
dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove mythtv-i686 which isn't installed.
(Reading database ... 43384 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking mythtv-i686-lirc-xvmc (from mythtv-i686-lirc-xvmc_0.14-1_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing mythtv-i686-lirc-xvmc_0.14-1_i386.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/mythbackend', which is also in package mythtv-i686-lirc
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
mythtv-i686-lirc-xvmc_0.14-1_i386.deb
Restarting MythTV server: mythbackend.

I'm guessing that my tinkering with apt messed up the the default package database that mythtv-i686-lirc-xvmc_0.14-1_i386.deb is expecting. Do I need to go back to a clean install?

The other thing is about install-nvidia.sh. When my system boots, I see the messages about it loading the nvidia module (& it being tainted). Do I really need to run install-nvidia.sh if I'm already loading the nvidia module?

Don't worry about it...XvMC only works w/ MPEG-2. If you get a hardward encoder in the future, apt-get remove mythtv<TAB>, then install-i686-lx. The message about the tainted module is probably about nvnet(driver for ethernet chipset). When X starts, if you don't see the nvidia splashscreen you don't have the binary video driver.
