I've been eyeing up MythTv for a while. When i found this distribution i figured it was about time I gave it a go (Linux newb here)

However after two install attempts i'm a bit confused... I was able to fully install the program however when it was finished the TV Tuner card wasn't functioning.

Symptom: Green bar across the screen with lots of static behind it.. whenever i go into TV Mode I can use the arrow keys to change channels, and the guide shows up with the correct channels but the only thing behind the guide is static and a green bar.

Facts:

TV Guide feature works fine. I can browse through all the channels and the programs howevr there is only static & a green bar for TV

lspci shows that it found my TV Card (bt878)

Questions:

1) I have an AMD XP proccessor, should i be chooseing the 586 install?

2) How do i start up the mythTV backend configuration program after the first boot?

3) Any pointers on configuring the Input source? i guess i don't have that setup correctly.

4) Also, after choosing 586 there is another option to choose if you have an IR remote and if your vid card supports xvd or something.... How do i know if my vid card supports this? Could this be why i don't see anything when i try to watch TV?

Thanks everyone

-Galaga

p.s. I currently only have a monitor hooked up.. I'm not even bothering with TV-Out yet....

edit: Added 4th question

Ok so i figured out how to start the back-end config app from this Thread

However i still don't seem to be able to configure the TV card correctly.

How do i know what Video Device to use, there are like 30 in the list?
(ex: /dev/Video /dev/Video0 /dev/Video1)

Thanks Again,
Galaga

If you only have one card, it is most likely:
/dev/video0
/dev/video0 and /dev/video are one and the same...

Thanks for the response Cesman.

Ok during bootup i can see that: bttv0=/dev/video0 (Is this boot process loged anywhere? it moves by kinda fast at boot time)

So i assume that is correct....

1) Is it possible my card uses the BT chipset but isn't compatable with the generic driver?

2) From my first post was the 586 option correct or should i have chosen 686?

many thanks

Well I figured out my problem for now...

The manufacturer of my TV Card changed chipsets between version 1 and version 2..

PHOEBE TV MASTER + FM
BT878
CPH050

PHOEBE TV MASTER + FM ver. 2
PV-878P+

Of Course I have version 2... oh well.. thanks for the help..

I'll have to wait till i can get another card.

I have the same problems although I'm using a TV Wonder VE. Any ideas what could be wrong?

In the setup I choose V4L or w/e the first option is for the cards presuming that is correct.

The both of you need to take a look at;
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/video4linux/bttv/CARDLIST you may need to tell the module which card you have in order to get it working.

Cessman,
Thanks for the response. I saw one of your posts(Tier 2 hardware i think) describing that procedure so I'm investigating that. My card isn't specifically on the list (CARDLIST) but it seems to be an exact copy of one of the cards that is. So i'll give that a whirl

If i get it working i'll post back with my settings.

-Galaga (Or i may throw the card out the window... not sure yet :P)
