Hey guys - after a long time learning R5B7 on an old P4 1.8GHz w/AGP and PATA drives, a friend (after seeing what I can do with it) has asked me to build a KnoppMyth box and new hardware.

The Hardware he's brought in:

Intel D945PVS Mainboard
Intel Pentium D805 Dual Core Processor
Kingston 1Gb DDR 667 Kit (2 x 512)
Western Digital WD200JS SATA Hard Disk
Pioneer DVR-111 DVD Burner
Leadtek PX7300GS
All wrapped up in a nice ThermalTake Bach case (No VFD option)

Software: KnoppMyth R5C7.

Now, I've already battled my way through the SATA hard drive set-up, and the system re-boots properly, but I am left with a blank screen and X failing.

Reading net posts on the PX7300, it seems it wasn't supported until more recent NVidia drivers. So my question(s) are:

I'm used to a Fedora background, and used to simply install the NVidia driver from their site. I would do the same in this case EXCEPT I've found scripts which seem to be Debian or KnoppMyth specific.

in particular:

install-nvidia-debian.sh - this needs a driver number on the command line it seems. I haven't a clue how this script works.

nvidia-live.sh - this script connects to a remote web-site, then gives me a 404 error.

In basic terminology - how would one go about updating to the latest NVidia drivers under the KnoppMyth (R5C7) distribution?

You need to get and install the latest nVidia drivers.

When X fails, does it go into text mode and present a login prompt?

If not you can enter into the OS by:

1) hold down the left shift key after post.

2) at the "lilo: " prompt put "linux init=/bin/sh"

3) after you log in, remount / read/write like so:
mount -o remount,rw /

Get the latest nvidia drivers by using wget or download them to a usb pen drive on another system and mount it, then install. See http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10314 as an example.

To expand on cesman's reply, you can install the latest nVidia driver just as you would on any other distro -- there's nothing magic about knoppix/debian in this regard. Note, you DO need to have the kernel headers in uncompressed form to install the nVidia driver, and that's one of the things handled by the script. But if you have already installed any nVidia driver, chances are your kernel headers are already on your hard disk.

Thanks to all people for replying.

Installing to the latest nVidia drivers cured all ails.

For the record:

1> I installed the latest nVidia driver using the 'sh NVIDIA-1.0.<version>.run' command.

2> performed 'shutdown -r now' once the installation was complete.

3> When the PC rebooted, I was greeted with the nVIDIA logo, X came up successfully, and KnoppMyth post-installation proceeded as normal.

Once again thanks lads.
