Post subject:  Can't get to the menu to chose installation type (6 options)

Hi,

I'm trying to install knoppmyth on a PII 350MHz (yes, I know, that sucks) on an intel SE440BX motherboard with 384MB SDRAM, a GeForce 4400ti (overkill :D) and a Medion tv-tuner (type 7134 I think).
I've checked the boot-CD with md5sum.exe and all is fine. When I try to boot it up, I can see the two files loading (the dots behind the filename (..........) fill the screen so i think they loaded up good).
After that, the screen goes black and it stays black. The CD keeps being accesed for a while and after that the CD-drive also drops dead.
I can't get to the screen where you have the 6 options: "1. Frontend 2. Auto Install 3. Auto Upgrade 4. Manual Install 5. Reboot 6. Quit".

When I use the "expert" command at boot, I still can't get it to load up. If i use "failsafe" it takes a while but i can get into a sorth of minimized console-thingy (sorry, no experience with linux yet). During the loading in failsafe-mode, it displays a few errors about bad sectors on hdb and some other errors, I think about USB, but I forgot (I only have one hard disk, and it is configured as master on that IDE channel). I orderd that hard disk on ebay and I haven't yet checked it, I hope it still works in spite of the few bad sectors.

I hope I have provided you guys (linux gurus :D) enough information.

Thanks in advance,

The Crazy Noob.

Hi,

If you have onboard video available, try popping out the Geforce card for the first part of the install. I have had issues where it would id the card correctly then insist on using the onboard video.

I suspect that the KnoppMyth install's default screen resolution and/or refresh rate is too high for the monitor you're using. That was the case for me.

Going from memory here, so excuse me if the description is not quite perfect.

Very very early in the install it pauses at screen with a KnoppMyth logo (I think a pinkish/red background) and the bottom couple of inches are black with white text. There's text about pressing a function key for options. If you do nothing there, it times out and uses a default set of options.

Perhaps try something almost guaranteed to work.

Code:
Knoppmyth screen=800x600 xvrefresh=72

If you know the box runs other settings use them instead.

Doesn't work. When I press enter right after the first screen you get where you can type the boot commands (like "expert", "tv", ...) the screen just blacks out.
If I use the command "tv" i can still see one line saying:
Code:
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
_  [[<- blinking underscore]]

After that screen, the computer just hangs.

edit: movie of computer when using "tv"-command (output on the tv is the same as on screen) http://rapidshare.de/files/24344779/PIC_0834.AVI.html

edit 2: Is there a way to do a full install when booted up in the failsafe-mode?

Never mind, I solved it: It was due to a crappy CD-ROM-drive.

I now have another problem however :( , more info in this thead. (made another thread because it's another problem)
