I'm completely new to debian, so I thought i would ask this.

1) After install, is it a good/bad idea to run apt-get update?

I did it last night and it seemed to upgrade a BUNCH of stuff (like 180MB of updates), but i"m not sure what it did. I'm more of an openbsd kind of guy.

I know there have been several ssl vulnerabilities and ssl was one of the things updated when I ran apt-get update.

2) What do I have to do to get my hollywood+ card supported? I'm not interested in using the tv out (I have a 16:9 24" CRT computer monitor) I would like the card to do HDTV playback (I have a pchdtv card coming to do recording) since my cpu is only athlon 2100+

3) Do I have to do anything special for an nforce1 board? I was told on here that the onboard video (geforce2 family) doesn't support hardware motion compensation, so I threw a geforce ti4600 in there. Do I need to do anything special to get the motion compensation working ?

4) A little unrelated: I would like to control the myth tv box from my laptop over ssh. What do I need to do ? I have cygwin tools installed here and already can view X applications on my cygwin xserver no problem. What do I need to do to get a control panel or somethin gin order to play back video? For testing, I have a dvd-rom drive in the machine and some dvd's here.

5) Now that knoppmyth is installed, when the machine boots, I see a knoppmyth logo . What now? Any pointers, esp to relevant documentation appreciated!

Thanks,

Rob

well on a straight debian box I would say it's a good idea, but it is a very bad idea on a knoppmyth box, because it uses some conflicting sources and an apt-get upgrade generally breaks things.

to get the motion compensation support you need to run the install-i686-lx script.

you can just use putty to access the box with ssh. knoppmyth does not have any sort of control panel.

well you should have the mythtv interface come up on boot, if you don't you need to look at the logs to see why it isn't coming up or open an xterm and run mythfrontend from there to see why. Did you complete the mythtv setup completely?
