Hi All,

I have just finished installing R4V2 on a Compaq Evo desktop. The install went fine but when I go to reboot all I get is a black screen with a cursor in the corner. The drive is detecting fine in the BIOS and I disable anything else as a boot option.

It appears to not be finding the MBR/boot loader.

Anyone have any ideas around this? Can I make a boot floppy somehow? Or use the CD to get past this and make sure the disk is ok? I had XP on here till moments ago and I know the machine is fine...

Any thoughts?

-Jeff

I can get in with the boot CD and then bail to a console prompt and mount /dev/hda1 and then see all the files. Is there a way from here to rewrite the MBR or otherwise reset the boot loader?

Thanks,

-Jeff

Some digging around revealed there is a BIOS update here:

I was running 2.2.

This BIOS update fixed it. BUT, I had to reinstall XP to run the update as it runs from within XP, so if you have an Evo D510, do the update before installing KnoppMyth...

Hmm, everything seems good so far except that the onboard NIC is not working... Didn't work under my XP install either, so I suspect it needs special drivers... I'll just get a cheapo NIC tomorrow and give it another go. Have a GF4MX card in there for TV out so I'm hoping the included config file just works out of the box....

For the benefit of any other EVO owners who read this, the onboard NIC does work... just make sure you have the other end of your cable plugged in to your home gateway and not something else.... DOH.
