Yes, I am a hypernoob when it comes to Linux... first time to try to install it. I've got an older system with an AMD 2000+ that I'm experimenting with before I try an install on any of my newer M$ machines. The 2000+ has a copy of WinME on it... do I need to fdisk and format before trying to boot the CD from knoppmyth.net? All I get now is a message at boot saying boot disk failure while booting from CD. I get nothing from the CD... no splashscreen, no attmpted install, nothing. I have tried to search the forum, but my searches came up with boot errors, not complete boot failures. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, abstractor |

I would guess one of two things: 1) Bad burn 2) Bad CDROM drive |

Yes, CD is set to boot in BIOS. I can try another CD drive in the machine, but I've run 2 burns at slowest speed and neither works. Just out of curiosity, what exactly is the machine supposed to recognize at boot? I'm burning these discs on a M$ machine... is it possible that the files are compressed or something in a format XP can't recognize or expand? I did notice a .tar.gz in the mix. Thanks, abstractor |

Hi, Double check that you burned the cd as a bootable iso file. Different burn programs handle iso's uniquely. You may be able to right click on the iso and see the option. Don't burn asa adata unless you want to preserve the original file. Mike |

Also don't forget to check the md5sum on the ISO image after you download it. |

Thanks for the tips. I was not making the disk bootable in Roxio, and even when I tried that it wouldn't work. Oddly enough, when I just double-clicked the image file, Roxio burned it as bootable! Finally got it installed. Thanks again for the ideas. abstractor |

The first time I ever asked one of our IT guys at work (who had a Networking and MS-Windows background) to burn a Linux ISO image to a CD for me, I ended up with a CD with one file on it containing the ISO image, rather than a bootable disk with the ISO image as it's filesystem. It's not necessarily an obvious distinction to the uninitiated. Everyone burns their share of coasters for one reason or another...

I can see myself having done something like that myself. lol In fact, I wonder if I ever did. |
