Post subject:  Hang after install, no booting

Sorry if this is a repeat post. I am a newbie to Linux.

AMD Duron 800mhz over clock to 880
786432k Ram
PM: WD 40gb IDE
PS: WD 30gb IDE
SM: 12x8x12 CD-RW
SS: 44x CD-ROM
Video: GeForce 2 64mb
TV-Card: N/A
Ethernet: Not Sure 10/100
Audio: OnBoard AC97 I think

KnoppMyth R5D1
I have choose Auto Install
It install and says Install successful on /dev/hda

I then process to reboot and this is where I get the problem
After reboot it hangs but not locks I can use [ctrl]+[alt]+[del] to restart the computer. Almost like no boot loader it loading.
I have restarted with the CD and goto manual install and partions. I have reset the /hda1 to boot and restarted and the same then happens.

Again sorry for a repost

First thing you want to do to eliminate any issues is to not overclock. Did you set you BIOS to boot from hard drive? Search for 'mount chroot lilo' as well...

Hi,

From what I can gather with the limited information, after the machine shuts down, it then goes through post, and when it finishes, it gets stupid and sits there?

If this is true, then you should check the hard drive jumper to be set on master, connected to ide0/1 (which ever is lowest) and that the drive is on the end of the cable. Also ensure your cmos settings are for the first drive to be the primary.

The extra 80mhz is really going help, by messing with memory timing and anything else that is really working on the crystal reference. Please keep the forum posted if the over clocking affects your system. The feedback is good for future reference.

I have the hda set as PM and the BIOS is set to HDD-0. And still does not work. I have gotten Mandriva 2007 to install and Fedora Core 6 PR, but for some reason I can get KnoppMyth to boot.
As for overclocking should I leave it on to help for errors cause of overclock or not. I have tried to boot without overclocking and the same thing happens.

Right after Post it stops.

Sounds like your boot record didn't get updated for some reason. See the troubleshooting page on the wiki for WillNotBootAfterInstall. Also, searching the forums for "mount chroot lilo" should turn up useful information.

Hi,

tjc is right as the wiki has a lot of good helpful tips and guidance.

Am curious as exactly the install procedure you used.

goto manual install

When you went manual, was that also an install?

Auto install should have made the drive bootable by loading lilo into the mbr. It is rather easy to redo manually and I will also look at the wiki to be sure the steps are there.

The over clock may or may not cause issues, just something to be aware of. With such a minor change in speed, I personnally would not bother opening a potentially troublesome door.

Working, Thank You for your help. Lilo wasn't being loaded. SO far so good. I still have it overclocked.

Hi,

Good to hear you are up. Maybe someday in the future after you have been running for a while, you could let us know how the over clocking pans out. Enjoy!

I had the same problem.
I had two discs while installing 1 pata(hda) and 1 SATA.

The machine would not reboot after install untill I removed the SATA drive. But when I did that it went on just fine.
