Post subject: | PVR 250 Black Screen |
I kind of stuck at the moment. I had myth running fine on a Fedora/.14 combo but my hard drive was too small and old. I figured I might as well just start fresh with a new 160 WD. I also stumbled apon Knoppmyth and thought this would be fantastic. It seems to install ok, it doesnt give me any error or anything but when I get into Myth (after running mythfilldatabase and configuring all the options) and goto try to watch 'live' TV it black screens me and I cant esc out of it. I can CtrlAlt F1 but I cant fix the GUI. This has happenend everytime except once where it went to a black screen with the OSD (but without channel info or the ability to change channels, just the blue bars and the time). I thought it might just be a problem with the live tv stuff so I tried to record a program but everytime I click on Program Guide it freezes. Any help will be appriciated. I have tried moving my 250 to different PCI slots already. I have an athalon 1700+ 512 of ram Ti4400 (for eventual tv out but right now it is just running to my CRT) and a PVR 250 Im at a loss. Thanks in advance |

well a couple of things. First, Since you say it freeses when you go into program guide I think it must be a setup problem. you should try to rerun mythtv-setup answer yes to both questions and go through all the steps agian. If that doesn't fix it run mythfrontend from an xterm and see what type of error messages get dumped out. Finally, are you using a mce pvr250? |

You're not really providing enough info to trouble shoot this...What motherboard do you have? If you search the forum, you should find enough info to trouble shoot problems. You'd also use the methods you'd use to trouble shoot MythTV on any other distro. |

Right sorry. My motherboard is a KM266 KM2M Combo-L 6738-010 RT. (pretty sure this is not VIA) I didnt really see those parts of the forum because the MCE is not what I thoght I had. But after thinking about it that does make sense. I bought it OEM on eBay (i know its working because it worked in my last box). and it has the RCA plugs on the back. Could this be the problem? I can do an error dump when I get home but I am at work right now. I thought I saw something about ivtv on MCE's on this forum, but im not sure. I havent changed anything in Knoppmyth yet. |

well one other thing. I can almost assure you even though I didn't look it up that anything with KM266 in it is a via chipset, and one of the ones with the problems. 133 and 266's have the problem for sure, and it appears to be a crap shoot with the 333 and 400's. |

Determine which card you have (someone posted a link to a page on identifying tuner cards recently). It should say 32032 on the sticker. Make sure that you've got myth configured correctly so that your "Video Source" is associated with the right input (usually tuner 0), this is easy to miss. You may also want to get/extract the latest firmware and drop it into your modules directory. I vaguely recall that the one in R4V2 is one rev. back. |

Am I hosed with the VIA chipset? I saw one post that a guy was able to get it mostly working after messing around with the BIOS settings (parallel among others). Is there a workaround that I am just not seeing? |

I guess I am just at a loss as to how the problem could be chipset related if it worked so flawlessly on FC1. It seems from reading these and the myth boards that if it has DMA problems in one distro it does in all of them. Dont get me wrong I am not trying to say anything bad about Knoppmyth. I just was wanting you to know that I have all but ruled that out. I hope it is just a problem with the MCE. Thanks for helping me so far. |

well yes if it has the dma problem it should be in all distro's. the dma problem is caused by the ivtv drivers. If you didn't have to do anything special to the ivtv drivers for FC1 then you shouldn't for knoppmyth. the mce250 thing is rather new, and it would have affected you in fc1 too. have you even attempted running mythfrontend from an xterm to see if you get any output, or looked in /var/log/messages or /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log to see if any of those places give a clue as to what is happening? a black screen has many causes, and noone is saying it is definitely a dma issue. |

/var/log/mythtv/backend.log says that the database cannot be found. Does this mean MySQL was never set up or that it just didnt create the database it was looking for. All of my channel info is correct in mythtv-setup - is this different from the database that it is requesting? Can I just make a new database or do I have to reinstall? I feel like such a dolt, sorry for bothering you all so much. I hope this is my problem. This seems wierd to me because Program Finder lists all the avaliable programs (program guide still freezes the system) If I run Myth from an xterm how do i get back to look at that term once it goes black? |
