I am attempting to install Knoppmyth R5C7 on an old machine which I know may struggle to support it. The computer is a Pentium 2 350 Mhz, 256 MB.

When I try to boot from the CD, Knoppix starts but freezes at
"Looking for CDROM in: /dev/hdc"

I have tried booting with NODMA, NOAPIC, FAILSAFE all with the same result.

I have investigated the BIOS and tried changing secondary IDE detection from Auto to CDROM. No joy.

I have tried the disk in a newer computer and it works and allows installation.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Further to the above I have checked the MD5sum and reburnt the CD at the slowest speed. Same result.

Anyone??

Problem Solved.

I changed the CDROM drive for another and it worked. It's funny because the original drive has allowed me to install other distros on the machine.

Sounds like a bad burn/media/drive. You should first vary the MD5Sum of the ISO you download then:
Reburn at a lower speed or different media.
Try another CD-ROM drive in teh system.

Soundoff,

In answer to your question about did I get my system working on the PII, the answer is no. I suspect it is due to my tuner card Winfast XP2000 Expert which does not seem to be very compatible with MythTV. My next project is to try Knoppmyth in a more modern machine P4 2.6Ghz but still using the same card (because that's what I have).

To get away with a very low end machine you either need to be streaming DVB broadcasts directly to your hard drive, or if your encoding analog TV use a card that does hardware encoding..

I have dual digital tuners in my P2 400 and it works great. Only problem is mythweb is a little slow but its still very useable
