Help...

my system records happily, and seems to play things back fine, etc. BUT I've been experiencing weird lockup's when I've left live video running and the system records two shows in the middle of the night. The first show starts, and then the system explodes 8 minutes into the second show... the system seems happy recording off of the 401 OR the 350 card separately. Watching Live TV while the 350 is recording seems fine. Basically the system seems to be totally non-responsive. (cannot ssh in, cannot switch to a console session, etc. I haven't been able to check for free memory, etc.

The error I'm seeing in my system log is:

The main pieces of the system:
Nforce2 board
PVR-350 (encoder 2, priority set to 20)
WinTV-401 (encoder 1, priority left at 0)

Any idea's?

I feel your pain. I had the kernel oops in kswapd for along time myself. I never really did figure it out. things to look at might need to lax your memory timings. make sure dma is on for the harddrive, do a fsck of all drives. Concider switching to XFS for /cache and /myth. I'm not sure what cured mine. I've done all of the above plus some complete reinstalls

XFS... ok, I'll try that and see what happens with that change.

Some of the pieces seem somewhat like voodoo computing. I'm not really a novice on Linux, but haven't done much with AV before playing with Mythtv...

Thanks for the reply.

Unless you are locking up during the installation of KnoppMyth, you should not post here.

I have been experiencing lock-ups lately. Usually happens if I leave LiveTV going and fall asleep, by the time i wake up its locked. It did this a while back, then stoped. I'm thinking it has to do with heat, at least my problem, its damn hot in my room. Probably the card overheats a bit.

It all started to happen again as it got hotter so... something to think about.

Yeah, this should probably be moved to somewhere other than Installation; heck, I'll bet it's not even KnoppMyth related. If it's the problem I think you're having (that is, the same probem I am), then it's the ivtv driver for the PVR-350. I can have the computer running for weeks at a time with no problems as long as I don't try to watch something while it's recording somethine else (I never watch live tv, but I'm sure it'd have similar problems).

I understand that the newer versions of ivtv fix the problem, but I'm waiting for an official "release" (rather than just downloading a release candidate).

it very well could be the ivtv driver...

I see these every once in a while in messages:

Code:
Jul 21 22:28:21 mythtv kernel: ivtv: giving up waiting for DMA pending clear

I also see this everyonce in a while in mythbackend.log

Code:
strange error flushing buffer ...

well I don't have a pvr350 I have a pvr250 and I used to get these kernel oops in kswapd every couple of weeks till I reinstalled and probably more importantly moved my data drives over to XFS. I know it shouldn't make a difference, but I saw a post that said it fixed their lockup problems and I switched, and I don't have the problems anymore. I just can't say for sure it was that, because I did a reinstall in that general timeframe as well.
