Post subject:  small disk

hi, I tried to install knoppmyth in the next pc:
300 mhz celeron
128 mb ram
32 mb video card
2x4 gb HD's (one with windows, the other with normal files)

I tried to install but the setup program gave me errors, so I will format one of the HD's and disconect the other, so it will be easier to install it.
My answer is: can I install it in my 4 gb disk?
will it work in my "old" pc??
thanks

no and maybe. You can't do an autoinstall on that small of disk. if you have hardware encoder it might work on that old of pc, but not well.

OK, I can't resist the pun...

You know they've got treatments for that small disk problem now and it doesn't even involve answering SPAM. Your local Best Buy/Circuit City/CompUSA/... will sell you a nice big HD at ~$1/Gb, via mail order you can get that into the $0.65-$0.75 range, and real bargain hunters can even manage $0.50/Gb.

But as Xsecrets says, the rest of the system is just not up to the job either.

hi
I don't live in USA, I live in south america, so the prices are a lot bigger
Well, I tried to install to a bigger HD but with autoinstall this error appear:
/usr/local/bin/KnoppMyth-auto: line 608: / 1000000 : syntax error: operand expected (error token is " / 1000000")

so I tried manual install, in the list only are 2 options (partitions and quit)
I select partitions and my HD, it says there isn't a partition table installed into my HD so I try to write it but the pc blocks

I think that the HD isn't mounted, it is conected to IDE-1 instead of IDE-0 (there's nothing there) so I think I need to conect it to IDE-0 to work
Is that right??

Jokes aside, I think the machine is VERY underpowered for this application. Handling video streams requires lots of disk space and memory and a fairly decent CPU.

First, even with a TV card that does the MPEG encoding, the CPU is too slow. Without, it is impossibly slow.

Second, 128Mb just isn't enough memory. Even 256Mb is kind of minimal.

Finally, if it's an older machine, as the two 4Gb drives lead me to believe, it's BIOS probably can't access a bigger hard drive properly even if you install one.

Oh, and... Autoinstall expects the disk to be the master on ide0.

I did that but now when checking the harware it says:

ide: late register of driver
hdb: lost interrupt
ide-scsi: CoD! =0 in idescsi-pc_intr

then, when it says scanning for HD partitions and creating /etc/fstabb... it doesn't do anything, so I press control+c and it says done. In the next task the same, it doesn't do anything until I press control+c, all this untill it says reset Hda and gives an error saying it's busy
the HD makes no sound in all the procces
what can I do??

I found the problem, it's because the HD is allways suspended (like shut down) I think I need to fix in the bios but I don't know how
can somebody help me?
thanks

Read the manual for your motherboard. Check the board's manufcatuer's website. Typically, you can disable this in the BIOS.
