I downloaded R4V3 and installed it on a 1.7GHz P4 with a PVR 350 carrd.

During step 2, I told it the Card type was a PVR250/350
video device: /dev/video
default input: Tuner 0 (I've also tried Composite 0)

I set up a video source called cable and xml tv downloaded my cable provider's listings

I specified the input connection: Tuner 0 -> cable (and also Composite 0 -> cable)

However, all I get is a black screen when I try to watch tv. I do see the numbers when I change the channel and the remote control appears to work (although a little delayed/slow) and when I press "Menu" I see the tv listings to set a recording. I also see the show name when I change the channel (although there is some sort of timezone problem).

I was at first getting ivtv timeout errors and noticed the ivtv interrupt was being shared; I went into the bios and specified irq 7 for the PCI slot containing the card and then reinstalled; that solved the interrupt message but I still get a black screen (and no sound)

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well there is your problem. If you have more than one input mapped to your video source it takes the first one it finds. Remove the setting for Composite 0 and it should work.

I think I tried it that way also, but I'll try again. I had tried the PVR 350 in a different PCI slot but then the mouse wouldn't work so I'm reinstalling again now. Thanks.

now I'm back to where I was with the previous release; after about 5 seconds of playing/watching tv it locks up

recording works ok and then watching the small window preview works, but as soon as I select a recording to play and it switches to full screen it locks up within 5 seconds

guess I'll try again when the next release comes out

i get the same problem. Blank screen on my monitor (not even trying to do TV out yet). I can exit the blank screen to get back to the menu, but that's about it.

this is not a knoppmyth problem. this is a problem with either A] your PC motherboard (is it a Via Systems perhaps?) or B] the version of ivtv driver.

so...

A] if your MB is a Via Systems, search the MythTV forums for some potential fixes (BIOS, different PCI slot, etc etc). these tweaks are *not* guaranteed to work in all cases -- some people have had to ditch their Via Systems mobos.

B] the later versions of the ivtv driver do much better with the PVR350's idiosyncracies. you will need to download and install the latest stable version of ivtv. directions for doing so (along with a lot more info on using the PVR350) can be found in my posts from back in february...

thanks for the heads up wrooster. I do have a VIA chipset mobo (but I would think that 40% of other people do too). I noticed that you used Knoppmyth R4V2. I'm trying to use R4V3. Will it be pretty similar if i follow the steps in that thread with the new version? You also say to use the later versions of ivtv, but doesn't R4V3 include the latest version (0.1.9)? Sorry for all the questions, i'll really new at this and i had a hard time looking for solutions. Thanks.

you need to determine whether your problem is the Via DMA issue or the ivtv driver. again, you'll need to spend some time in the MythTV archives.

here's a start:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/e ... string=VIA
see the search button here:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/

yes.

0.1.9 is not the latest and *may* be your problem. i have had the best luck using chris kennedy's "improvements" to the ivtv code along with mattias badaire's ivtv-fb framebuffer device (per the thread referenced above). this way i don't need a monitor (X on TVout works fine) and there are no crashes when recording.

one quick test you can run for us...

on your myth box, start up live video and let it crash out. now run the following command and post the output:

$ dmesg | tail -50

this may help us diagnose whether you have a Via DMA problem or your ivtv driver is hosing you up. don't get discouraged, you are closer than you think to having it all work. i'd say 10-15 commands away. :)

well you would be thinking wrong when you are thinking about people using mythtv. maybe 40% of them start out on via, but 90% of those people give up and get something else, because via has known problems with no known solutions.

That's what it outputs. If it does turn out to be a VIA chipset problem that doesn't seem like it has a workaround, I think that I'll haveta use Beyond TV for windoze.

ok, that doesn't look so bad.

couple of questions...

first, you are looking to get TV out on the PVR350, right? the reason i ask is i see the Nvidia driver module being loaded above. are you using that for something else, or ???

next, within MythTV, in i-forget-what menu, there is a check box that says something along the lines of "Use Hardware MPEG Encoder" -- do you have that checked off?

finally, provide the output of these commands...

$ lspci
then find your PVR-350 in the list above; at the beginning of the line is a set of hex base numbers, e.g. mine is "02:09.0"
run the following command, using the numbers in front of your PVR350: (*)
$ setpci -s 02:09.0 4.w
and really finally
$ ls -sl /dev/video*

A hexadecimal value will be printed. Convert the least significant digit to binary. For example, if you see 3, that's 0011 in binary (bit two is 0). If you see 7, that's 0111 in binary (bit two is 1). In the first example, bus mastering is disabled. It's enabled in the second example.

first off, i appreciate all your help jim. I thought mythtv was gonna be a breeze to setup. I guess not huh? hehe.

well actually, what i'm trying to do is just get the tv to show on my monitor. I don't have a tv to hook it up too right now, but eventually i would like to do that. I installed the NVIDIA drivers because that's what it said to do in the installation i believe.

I tried looking for this in mythtv-setup but i can't find it anywhere. I did select my capture card as "MPEG2 PVR-250 (etc. etc)" I'm not sure if that's what you mean. I didn't see a check box for use MPEG2 encoding in the normal setup menu either (the menu with the live tv, dvd, video, etc.).

ok i did this and here's what i get:

after running lspci:
00:0f.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC15 MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)

after running setpci -s 00:0f.0 4.w:
0006 which translates to 0110 in binary

then i run ls -sl /dev/video* and I get:

ok, i don't mean to be an ass but ... you need to start all over and explain where you are going. if you aren't clear about what it is you are trying to do there is no way to help you. so...

what video capture card do you have? (brand/model)
what VGA video card/mobo hardware do you have? (brand/model)
what (if any) TV output card do you have? (brand/model)

what are you trying to do with MythTV and all of the HW in the near term?
what do you want to do in the long term?

haha, okay i guess that's the best way right now then.

So this is what I want my mythtv to do. In the near term, I want to be able to watch TV on my computer monitor and have it record my TV shows like a Tivo. All this by just using the PVR-350. In the long term, I would like to be able to use my other Hauppauge WinTV (very old, just a tuner) card that I eventually want to use with MythTV (so that I can watch one thing and records something else). Eventually, I would like to be able to get TV-out but I don't have a TV to output on right now.

here's my specs:

Video capture card: Hauppauge PVR-350
Video card: Geforce2 MX (generic brand)
mobo: Athlon 1 GHz with ABIT Mobo with Via KT133 chipset
Sound card: Soundblaster Live!
Hard Drive: 200 GB Seagate
tv output will be provided from the PVR-350

ok i hope that cleared things up. Sorry for the mess.
