I was just curious if the autoinstall option would work to downgrade from R4V3 to R4V2 and still save the recordings etc and get them back in the database properly?

I strongly suspect so. The install part seems to be brute force, just wipe the root partition and copy stuff off of the CD. Then the mythrestore script copies a bunch of stuff back from tarballs and a DB dump. One of the developers could give a more definative answer, but that's the way I'd bet.

No, an auto install would wipe your system clean. Auto Upgrade is what you want to use.

Yes, run mythbackup on R4V3 then use Auto Upgrade on R4V2.

cool for some reason the prism and orinoco drivers included with r4v3 don't like my system, must be something to do with the newer kernel.
