AMD64 3200 Mhz
Gigabyte K8M800 Mobo
Onboard Via graphics
IDE 8g HD (also SATA not used for Knoppmyth)
Winfast XP Expert TV card

I am using the above machine to try Knoppmyth. I had it successfully running on R5C7 although it was not easy getting it to recognize the TV card and had problems probably due to poor signal strength. In an effort to upgrade I have turned to R5E50 which successfully recognisies the TV card and I now have a good aerial connected. I have however hit the following problems:

Xorg problem with work around
I did a clean reinstall on hda. The installation proceeded but stopped when trying to start Xorg, giving an error message
Code:
INIT:Id "c7" respawning too fast:disabled for 5 minutes

I was able to get around this by booting to Puppy mounted on the SATA drive and deleting the /etc/X11/xorg.conf. On reboot to Knoppmyth when it failed to find video I was able to ctrl-alt-f1 to consol from where I was able to run dpkg-reconfigure to set up xorg.conf.

tv_grab_au problem
When I ran mythtv-setup it could not connect to the local grabber (tv_grab_au). On investigation I found that all the other tv_grab files were there but tv_grab_au was not present. As a work around I reinstalled r5c7 and copied /usr/bin/tv_grab_au and /usr/share/xmltv/tv_grab_au/channel_ids to another partition. I reloaded r5e50, performed by xorg work around, created directory /usr/share/xmltv/tv_grab_au/, copied the backed-up files from the other partition and was able to proceed with mythtv-setup. While fetching channels during Input Connections I get nearly 30 instances of
Code:
Use of uninitialized value in numeric lt (<) at /usr/share/perl5/Date/Manip.pm line 3299.

or something similar. A check of Channel Editor shows all stations present but I am unable to select a starting channel back in Input Connections as no channels are listed in the window. If I try to Watch TV I get a black screen. The /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log shows the following
Code:
2007-04-06 09:55:01.527 TVRec(1): Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV
2007-04-06 09:55:01.660 TVRec(1) Error: Start channel from DB is empty, setting to '' instead.
2007-04-06 09:55:01.768 TVRec(1) Error: Start channel invalid, setting to '' on input Television instead.

Please verify the channel in the 'mythtv-setup' Channel Editor.
2007-04-06 09:55:02.532 TVRec(1) Error: Failed to set channel to 3.

2007-04-06 09:55:07.312 Please go into the TV Settings, Recording Profiles and
2007-04-06 09:55:07.313 setup the four 'Software Encoders' profiles.
2007-04-06 09:55:07.314 Assuming RTjpeg for now.
2007-04-06 09:55:07.523 NVR: Error, unknown audio codec
2007-04-06 09:55:15.097 TFW, Error: Write() -- IOBOUND begin cnt(145838) free(100752)

I should mention that I boot to KnoppMyth with Grub as I have a number of other systems on this machine.

Can anyone explain
1. Why xorg and doesn't work out of the box. Bad burn?
2. Why tv_grab_au doesn't work out of the box.
3. Why I can't select a starting channel.

I don't know why tv_grab_au is missing in recent R5, but you can get it from here:

http://www.onlinetractorparts.com.au/rohbags/xmltvau

There are other grabbers for Australia that are better, but this is the only legal one.

Someone stated that the legal was wasn't any good and folks get others. I'll include the legal one in the next release.

Thanks for that. It still does not explain why I don't get a listing of channels to use as the starting channel even though all channels are listed in the Channel Editor.

Your call, but I reckon a bad old tv_grab_au is better than none at all.

Of course, grabbing the DVB EIT data from the stations is best, but there are still some bugs in that, and it doesn't help analogue TV card users.

I agree. tv_grab_au is a good place to start.

Btw, I solved my problem with the start channel. I hadn't set the channel numbers in Channel Editor.

Is tv_grab_au_reg illegal? Surely since it gets data from a community maintained repository that should be okay - or is it illegal for the tvguide.org.au people to store that information?

I am not a lawyer, but I think some of the data in that community database has been cut and pasted from copyrighted sources. (e.g. even though the ABC publish XML on their web site, it is still littered with © symbols)

The other tricky thing about it is that the grabber needs a username/password. One more thing that MythTV, or KnoppMyth, needs to configure.
