In a previous Post http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=12707&highlight=partition+error bobertv details a formatting error using auto install. He later gives a solution to his problem.

I am getting the same error with R5E50. But in my case I have my hard disk on a Promise Ultra100TX2 controller card, with 2 CD drives on the motherboard IDE channels.

I have tried disconnecting one CD drive and moving the other to channel 2 of the Promise card. But the system does not find the CD drive and hence I cannot boot.

I previously had the system load and boot PCLinuxOS without any such problem!

Any ideas?

Thanks

More info on problem:-

Tried the new R5F1 release with same sort of problem.

My setup means that I have the following:-

CD at hda
CD at hdc
Hard disk at hde

Knoppmyth auto install insists on installing to hda!!!!!

Tried a manual install using R5F1, seemed to be successful, but now end up at a GRUB prompt on booting.

By the way, the manual install was similar to the auto install, but gave the option to install to hde.

Now off to search the Forum re the GRUB issue.

I suspect the process will be easier if you connect your boot drive to your mobo's primary/master. Any reason you don't do this?

FWIW, I helped out my brother and my nephew do knoppmyth installs. Both of them had 2 optical drives and in both cases, the system would refuse to boot up after the install finished. In both cases, having them disconnect one of the optical drives solved the problem. I don't recall if I had them run the install again.

If you are using the default install, you may need to use the manual install option instead, as you are using a non standard config. In the KMwiki there is some info on a Manual Install.

Thanks to Marc and Bruce for their replies.

Marc my mobo has an ATA66 controller, the ATA100 card gives me more disk throughput, useful for recording.

However numerous attempts to manually install to hde have failed. I shall have to move the disk to hda, which I know works.

Fortunately the present installation is a 'learning curve' exercise before I purchase more suitable hardware.

Thanks for your help.

Bill:

I'm not sure that you'll have any problems with an ATA66 controller for recording. How many tuners are you planning to use and are you going to record hidef or std def? I've done hidef and stddef on an old P3-500 w/ an ATA-66 controller without problems, although I never tried them together.

Another angle that would work is:

1. Attached a smaller, older drive to /dev/hda1 and install on that. Speed won't be critical

2. Attached a larger capacity, faster drive to the ATA100 card.

3. Move the /myth directory over the the large / fast drive.

This way your boot drive isn't being used for recordings. Having said all this, I stil doubt that ATA-66 will be a problem.
