Hi,
I'm having an alsa problem following a (auto) upgrade to R5F1.

Everything is working fine except alsa, which was working in R5E50.

I've seen a few other R5F1 postings about needing to run alsaconfig and alsacfg as root (e.g. this one
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... ht=alsactl
). I had some similar symptoms to the poster; freezing when I run alsactl.

I've done some investigation to see what's in the log files;

Quote:
dmesg | grep alsa
cx2388x alsa driver version 0.0.6 loaded
ALSA /usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/pci/ac97/ac97_codec.c:2037: AC'97 1 does not respond - RESET

When I execute alsaconf it searcges for sound cards, reports that it's found an intel8x0 ALi M5455 PCI device, asks if can modify the configuration files then hangs when trying to write /var/lib/alsa/asound.state

Quote:
Running update-modules...
Loading driver...
Setting default volumes...
Saving the mixer setup used for this in /var/lib/alsa/asound.state.

The file /var/lib/alsa/asound.state does'nt exist and the process locks (even a kill -9 won't kill it).

When I look at /var/log/messages it gives some additional information

Quote:

May 20 22:13:23 mythtv kernel: intel8x0: clocking to 48000

By way of background lspci | grep Multi gives

Quote:

I've found a few references on google to problems with the ALi Corporation M5455 chipset under linux, but nothing recent (and it worked fine in the last version of Knoppmyth).

These may be hinting at an IRQ related problem. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Luke.

Simply a WAG at this point, but what happens if you create asound.state with
Code:
touch /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
then run alsaconfig/alsactl?

slowtolearn:

I tried creating a blank
Code:
/var/lib/alsa/asound.state
This allowed me to run alsaconf cleanly.

This gives the following in /var/log/messages:

Quote:
May 21 20:43:24 mythtv kernel: ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:04.0 disabled
May 21 20:43:42 mythtv kernel: PCI: Enabling device 0000:00:04.0 (0000 -> 0003)
May 21 20:43:42 mythtv kernel: ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:04.0[A] -> GSI 18 (level, low) -> IRQ 18
May 21 20:43:43 mythtv kernel: ALSA /usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/pci/ac97/ac97_codec.c:2037: AC'97 1 does not respond - RESET
May 21 20:43:43 mythtv kernel: intel8x0_measure_ac97_clock: measured 50752 usecs
May 21 20:43:43 mythtv kernel: intel8x0: clocking to 48000

I even heard a click through my speakers.

The the session still hangs when I run
Code:
alsactl store
No alsa related messages appear in /var/log/messages.

Too Many Secrets
The motherboard is an ABIT - ULi8 M1689, with an XP 2500 chip.

I do recall having some alsa problems in R5D1 with this board - I think I had to upgrade to a newer version of asla to get it working.

Any ideas? Unfortunately this on our combined FE/BE machine so it's having quite an impact on the family.

Thanks

Luke.

I know it sounds dumb, but I had to let the alsactl store run for a few minutes before the /var/lib/alsa/asound.state file was created. I remember vividly what I did.

1. Warm reboot.
2. Played a recording thru FE (hoping for sound) - no sound
3. <ctl><alt><F2> and login as root. (NOT SSH)
4. alsaconfig to unmute and raise volume (with recording still playing to hear)
5. <Esc> to exit alsaconfig
6. alsactl store 1 (as this would at least run and give me a prompt again, so I did it)
7. alsactl store (and it seemed to hang).
8. <alt><F7> to watch recording that was still playing.
9. at this point my details get fuzzy. I watched the recording a bit, then I think I bumped around the FE under settings, but I don't remember making any changes. I might have even played another recording.
10. After a few minutes (more then 2 less then 10) <ctl><alt><F2> and the prompt was there!
11. checked /var/lib/alsa/asound.state and it was there.
12. reboot and the settings stuck.

I don't know what, if any of the above 'worked' for me, but that's my experience. Maybe it was just the 37th time I ran 'alsactl store' or something I don't even remember during the previous reboot that did the trick... Maybe your cure will finger the exact fix!

Too Many Secrets

Thanks for the instructions but the system is still hanging when I run alsactl. I've tried leaving it for over an hour but it still doesn't exit cleanly.

To restart the WAF, I'm going to roll-back to R5D1 for now.

Thanks for the ideas,

Luke.
