OK... first, I've just upgraded my system... the new specs are:

Athlon-64 3000+ processor
MSI K9MM-V Mobo
1 gig memory
Nvidia GeForce Ti 4200
Hauppage PVR-150 MCE
1 250 gig Maxtor SATA HD (partitioned as sda1(50 gig root), sda2(10 gig swap), and sda3(190 gig storage partition)
1 250 gig WD IDE HD (partitioned as /myth, with previous data and backup)
1 IDE DVD-RW drive
PS2 keyboard and mouse
USB connections: APC UPS and MCE IR reciever

I've tried upgrading several times, both with the IDE drive installed and, as a test, with only the SATA drive and the DVD drive installed. Each time, I've gotten completely through the install, and have gotten through boot to X. It will then ask me for the root password. Usually it will freeze at this point, though a couple of times I have gotten as far as the mythtv-configure script. At any rate, the farthest it has gotten before freezing is when I would try to select an option in the configure menu. I don't know what else to try, and I am hoping that someone may have an idea how to fix this.

Note: I have attempted the procedures outlined in http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15338 and http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15324 and have met with no success.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First thing that springs to mind is a cpu overheating.

What does the CMOS say?

CPU overheating shouldn't be an issue... I'm running with 3 case fans plus the processor fan, and the temperature sensor reads normal.

Next, you should probably have a look at debugging.

When it asks for the root password, don't type it in. Leave the system 5 minutes then type it in. If it freezes again, then it's not related to overheating (yes, I know you already said this, but it's good to see if it's at least time related).

On reboot, don't enter the root password, but pop up an xterm (alt-x) and have a look at the log files. You should be able to do this as the mythtv user, so type "ls /var/log/myth/". There should be a file in there called Knoppmyth-run.log or something (I'm not at my machine). Type "tail -20 /var/log/myth/<the file>" and have a look at the output. Does it give any clues? Try the other log files.

If you don't have any luck there, type "su -" and enter the root password. Does it crash then? The actual command being executed when it is crashing is the next thing to try. I'll look it up when you feed back the results of the above, if you don't find out anything useful. If you enter the commands from the script individually it will narrow down the cause of the problem.

Overall, though, it sounds like a hardware issue. Are you using a USB keyboard? What's a Nvidia GeForce Ti 4200 ? I don't know that card. Does it have a GPU?

Await yours

Mike

OK... I've tried some other options. As far as I can ascertain, there is no problem with the hardware- I can leave up the install cd running as long as I want and the machine will still respond. Once I install to the hard drive, though, it freezes up more or less as soon as X starts. Sometimes it will show the background image, but more often I just get the X interface with the initial window asking for the root password and a gray moire pattern where the background image should be. I wonder if my graphics card is to blame, but can find nothing in the log files that will indicate why it is freezing. I have pulled off the log files- which ones would be useful to post?

I'd look at (in order):

/home/mythtv/.xsession-errors
/var/log/Xorg.log
/var/log/myth/mythfrontend.log
/var/log/myth/mythbackend.log
/var/log/messages

OK, having checked the logs myself, I didn't see anything that jumped out at me, but my linux-fu is not strong. Here are the logs:

First thing that springs to mind is that you have a log of the backend when it should never have started. You said it crashed at the start of the setup, so it shouldn't have started the backend at all.

It starts with no setup information (that line about the ip address error) since you have never completed the setup. What I think you should try next is to disable the backend prior to entering the setup's root password (alt-f2 will do it).

Also, have you tried an autoinstall with just the blank sata disk? If it goes well, you could easily restore the previous database manually from the old IDE disk.

Sorry I've taken so long on this... work is hell (but a 60 hour paycheck will be nice.)

Anyway, I've tried again installing to a 30 gig IDE drive with only that drive and my DVD-RW installed (thinking maybe the SATA drive may be part of the problem). After the install, I hit Alt-F2 to insure that the backend was down, and got partially through the startup install menus, but the machine is still freezing. I've found a couple of interesting entries in the log files, posted below.

^--As near as I can tell, this seems to be the moment the machine froze.

Just to re-iterate, the motherboard, processor, memory, and power supply are brand new, so the problem should not be the hardware. The motherboard does say it has a VIA bios chip... would that make a difference?

Thanks

Does mean it is... I won't go over the saga that I had with 4 "new" Memorex DVD burners a few weeks ago. Via chipsets have been problematic in the past. However, I know of no issues w/ newer chipsets. I did see if you ran memtest overnight to test the new hardware...

Well... finally, I just swapped another mobo with my new one. I think it was a conflict with the onboard video card. It is up and running on the new hardware. thanks for the help.

You can nearly always disable the onboard video, if you still want to use it.

The CMOS settings will do this, and free up the memory, too.\

Well, at this point, I have it running on the new mobo, working well, (other than an issue with the remote) so there's no need to go fixing what isn't broken. luckily, I had mobos to swap.

Thanks for the help, at any rate.
