Post subject:  Could not connect to the master backend server

Hi,

I attempted to install knoppmyth and I get it all set up following each step on the screen until I eventually get to the error:

Could not connect to the master backend server -- ...

Are there instructions for stupid people like me that have every step documented. Such as step one type this. Then click here. Then do that.

Here is what I did:
I first loaded it up with knoppmyth wheel since it freezes if I don't. I then selected to install it manually so that I wouldn't kill my wife's Windows installation. I followed each step and eventually told it to install. When it was done, it gave me a prompt. I typed reboot. When it told me to remove the CD, I replaced the CD with my Debian rescue disc so that I can change a couple of things. (Last time I tried this, lilo didn't work right and XFree86 would just output garbage to the screen.) Anyway, I then grabbed a book to learn how to use vi since I only knew emacs. I then edited /etc/lilo.conf and commented out the first 3 lines. I then changed /etc/X11/XFree86conf-4 (or something like that) and changed vesa to nv. I then removed my Debian rescue disc and then rebooted. I then followed the instructions step by step as they were presented to me. When asked if I wanted to use a remote and the question below it, I told it I did have a remote and that my videocard wasn't capable of whatever it was below that. Anyway, at the end, I tell it that I wanted to watch TV and it gives me that error.

Here's the important hardware involved:
Built in Network Adapter
Hauppauge WinTV Theater
Really nice Nvidea Card
Audigy 2 Platinum Sound Card

Sorry, I can't really get much more detailed than that since this is my wife's computer and I haven't studied it as much as my own.

Any help would be awesome.

Have you completed the configuration, set up direct data, tuner card, etc.? Have you taken a look at the log? Have you search the forum? Have you taken a look at the troubleshooting section of the MythTV docs?

I finally figured out the solution on my own. It had something to do with multiple instances of mythtv running at the same time. I eventually found that knoppmyth was not exactly what I was looking for so I took another stab at getting myth to work on my Debian box and finally got it working. For such a neat program, it sure is a pain to get working. ;)
