Post subject:  Auto upgrade over manual install?

I originally did a manual install of R4V3 so that the program would run from /dev/hdb rather than hda (I dual boot with Windows).

1) Can I auto-upgrade this manual install, or does auto-upgrade expect the auto-install defaults?

2) Assuming I cannot auto-upgrade, can I run mythbackup, do a manual install of R4V4.1, and then run mythrestore? Did anything change in the database between the two versions that would make it a bad idea to restore a R4V3 database on top of R4V4.1?

I'm trying to avoid losing the information about the programs that I have already recorded and would like to keep.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can auto upgrade over manual install. Just make sure you run mythbackup first.

When I ran auto-upgrade, it still tried to install on hda rather than hdb, even though mythtv is installed on hdb.

Back when I did the manual install, I had to write the configuration file out to someplace where I could edit it, then load it back in, then continue with the install. Is there a time during the auto-upgrade where I can get my hands on the configuration file? I looked around for it, but couldn't find anything obvious

Thanks

I didn't notice that you mentioned /dev/hdb sorry... The configuration file is where it states the the docs. You can copy it to your home and edit it there and load it from there. So, do another manual install. Before rebooting, chroot to /dev/hdb, remove /home/mythtv/.configure and touch /home/mythtv/.upgrade. Again run mythbackup before proceeding.

Thanks, I got it upgraded. The .upgrade seemed to be the key.

I did have to make a change to mythbackup first though. It was trying to backup ./etc and ./home after it had changed directory to /var/lib/mysql/mythconverg. I just added a cd / before "# Tars newer part of /etc".

Thanks for your help.
