Hello,

I have an existing MythTV set-up built on Fedora Core. I also have an older 1GHz Celeron system where I've pulled out the hard drive and replaced it with an IDE-Compact Flash adaptor in order to make a nearly-silent MythTV frontend. I'm wondering whether KnoppMyth would be an appropriate distribution for building this system. Currently, the system works almost perfectly when I use the latest KnoppMyth live CD to connect to my existing backend. However, I'd like to transfer this to the flash drive. The automatic Installation option doesn't seem to be working--I'm guessing because the flash drive is only 1GB large--and for some reason I haven't been able to get beyond partitioning in the manual installation. Is there a better way to do this?

I believe you need at least 6Gb to install KM.

Flash memory is not built to withstand the number of writes that a distribution such as KnoppMyth would subject it to, although there are ways to get around that. Searching for "flash drive" on these forums yields posts such as

You may be interested in a network-boot frontend (no disks) - See Greg Frost's posts in the above links and search for his diskless frontend script.

Thanks for the reply and for the links. The knoppmyth_diskless_frontend.bash script for a diskless frontend looks tempting, but since I'm using Fedora for my backend it will take quite a bit of hacking to make it work.

I'm intrigued by the discussion about remastering the Knoppix install CD in the first thread you point to. I don't think it's a problem to put the filesystem from the Install CD on the flash drive and then boot right off of the flash drive. (Since the install image can't assume it is writeable, I'm hoping this will also address the write limitation problems of flash.) However, there are just a couple of showstoppers: (1) having to specify some additional needed kernel parameters each time it boots; (2) having to manually enter in some customization information each time it boots (e.g., the fact that I want to use the CD as a live frontend, the IP address and login information for my backend, etc); (3) not having a working lirc for my remote control.

(1) isn't a problem if you modify boot/isolinux.cfg, but I don't know how to deal with (2) and (3). I guess what I'm looking to do is to slightly tweak the KnoppMyth Install image so that it boots magically into the frontend that I want, but I don't know how to get inside of the KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX file to do that--and where I should tweak once I'm inside. Is this documented anywhere?

Thanks again for your help.

I use net booting with a flash drive, but I don't use the included script.

See fairly detailed instructions here. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11169&highlight=

In a nutshell, you take a fully installed system, copy the contents to your backend, boot from the flash drive, and NFS takes care of the rest. Should be easy to integrate into your non-knoppmyth backend system. It acts just like the hard drive is still there, but without the noise.
