Post subject:  Installed KnoppMyth but cannot get to GUI

I have installed KnoppMythR5F27 using 'auto install' on a Dell Dimension 5150c all seems OK when I reboot or switch the PC on I get "mythtv login:".
I can login in as me or Root but cannot get to a GUI screen from the documentation I expected to launch straight into GNOME.

After logging in as mythtv I entered startx and came up with the following messages ( have not managed to capture all the message as it has scrolled past the top of the screen):
xx windows system version 7.1.1
Release Date: 12 May 2006
x Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1
Build Operating system: UNKNOWN
Current Operating System: Linux mythtv 2.6.10-chw-13 ~1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Jun 2 21:86:*^ PDT 2007 i686

Fatal server Error:
no screens found
X10: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0:0"

Not being a Linux expert I tend to rely on GUI, am I missing a step ?
Thanks in advance,

It sounds like your X configuration isn't right. Start here. http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BlackScreenAfterInstall

Thanks, I tried
install-nvidia-debian.sh 1.0-8776 -force

Came up with an error No nVidia VGA adapter found.

Most of that article related to nVidia so I am not sure this is the correct route ??

Since it seems you haven't an nVidia, perhaps stating which video card you do have.

Hi,

Just to get things going, as has been said many times in several places, try the vesa as the xorg.conf driver. tjc just posted a sample in a different area on this very thing.

You might be able to use ati as the driver, but get it working with the vesa first.

I have seen many times on the Dell boxes that it likes to pick up the onboard video (when present) which is often the i810.

Also check that xorg.conf hasn't gone and asked for an off the wall resolution. 1024x768 or 800x600 should work on most anything

Thanks all but I gave up, which I know is not a good thing to do !!
I installed Ubuntu with Kaffeine which does the job well enough.
