When I installed my system, I didn't choose the 'tv' option on startup because at the time I was just connected to a monitor.

Is there a list of changes to make once you are up and running to do what 'tv' mode would have done?

the doc Tips and Hints says:
If you have the system hooked up to a TV, then **ENSURE** that /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 contains:
HorizSync "30 - 50"
VertRefresh "60"

and

If you have your box hooked up to a TV and, when it boots, you see a message saying Press <RETURN> to see modes...... You'll need to edit your lilo.conf At the top, it should say vga=<XXX>, change it to vga=normal Don't forget to lilo -v when you are done

Anything else?

TV out will be on an Asus 5200 board. Is 800x600 the proper resolution for that?

I'd stay 800x600, but I don't know what your TV supports... 800x600 should be a safe bet.
