I've just installed R5F27 over a previous version due to a bunch of problems. I entered "knoppmyth" at the boot: and it fully installed without asking for a root password. My previous password isn't accepted. ssh and telnet are both refused.

Is there a default password? I don't see any mention of it in the docs.

it's been a while for me, but I think asking for the root password is like steps 4&5 first enter, then re-enter, so it's two steps. AFAIK, there is no default -- you HAVE to enter it or it won't install.

To reset the password to nothing:

hold down the left shift key at boot
at the "lilo: " prompt put "linux init=/bin/bash"

at the # prompt type "mount -o remount,rw /"

then "nano /etc/shadow"

just remove the encypted password between the first of set of colons.

The problems were deeper than that. Using the install disk over an existing system just doesn't work. I had the same problems as before, and the artifacts of it wiping the passwords without asking for new ones were the least of the problems. I ended up wiping the disk and re-installing.

neither the root or Mythtv user are allowed to log in using Telnet or SSH. You have to log in using the account you created during the setup and then su to the root account.

Nice catch vabiro.

Dthom, see the R5F27 Hints, under Known Change # 6.1, reading the whole thing is highly recommended...
