Post subject:  No SPDIF output for livetv or recorded progs, all others r ok

Hi,

I am running Myth R4V3 (I think mythtv 0.14) for quite a while now with PVR-350, SB PCI Live with Coax-SPDIF out to my Creative decover DDTS-100.
I have connected the sound out from the PVR to sound in of the SB.
Recording is OK.
Using analog output of SB is OK

SPDIF is working fine for mplayer (mp3, divx, ...) but not when viewing live TV or playing recording programs.

On the other hand, if I play recorded progs (*.nuv) with mplayer I get SPDIF output!

It seems some mythtv settings/config? Is alsa supprt included?

Cheers,
Tom.

I am guessing you are using pvr350 tvout and have mythtv setup to use that? If so then mythtv as in recordings and live tv this is a different video player from mplayer that is used in videos, will direct the sound to the pvr350 card and it will go out there. I suppose it would be possible to somehow redirect that back through the system, but I have yet to find anyone who figured it out. This is one of the drawbacks to using pvr350 tvout.

Indeed Xsecrets,

I configured mythtv to use the tv-out of the PVR.

I redirect the sound from the PVR output back in the soundcard, otherwise I don't get sound when recording. I CAN see livetv with sound from PVR SND out -> soundcard in -> soundcard out

So the soundcard just forwards all sound, only to the analog out, but not to the SPDIF.
I think the player in mythtv needs to be changed to enable SPDIF out, just like the mplayer using the alsa options.

Cheers,
Tom.

In R4V4 (MythTV0.15.1) there is is config option for that...

actually with a pvr card you would get sound when recording even if your sound isn't redirected properly as the pvr cards do not use a sound device and mux the audio directly in with the video stream in hardware.

The PVR takes the tv signal from the air and picks out the sound and video. It then passes this to myth where it's written to a nuv file.
When it's played back myth passes the nuv to the PVR350 and it decodes sound and video and send it out of it's cables.

Many people take the PVR sound and pipe it back into line-in where it passes through the card to it's outputs and onto the amp. OK, so we need to redirect this to the S/PDIF output, not the master output.

The FAQ, section 7.2 suggests
amixer set Line,0 75%,75% mute captur
which sets lin-in to 75%, mute's it and marks it for capture
then
amixer set Capture,0 100%,100% mute captur
I interpret as mute the capture channel (so it's not heard directly),
listen to the capture intput (line-in) at 100% and act as a capture
device (so Myth can read it)

However, further reading suggests that Myth doesn't do this for the PVRs - it just lets the line-in flow out of the master output.

Now Tom, I guess you have the line-in unmuted under alsamixer - and Myth controls the master volume thus allowing you to adjust the (analog) volume under mythtv?

Maybe something can run in parallel that captures line-in and feeds it to the pcm output? (which, depending on .asoundrc will be spdif or analog?) Maybe this can be put into Myth one day?

Please correct me if I'm wrong :)

OK
whilst playing back atv show through Myth
try this:

arecord -D hw:0,0 -fdat | aplay -D mixed-digital

note 'mixed-digital' is the alsa device name from my .asoundrc

Works for me ;)
