I am a not-completely-newb newb who is running into some problems getting mythtv to work. I get throught the installation just fine without any errors and the installation seems to go flawless, but when I try to watch live TV, the system hangs. I also tried changing the weather setting and the system hung. Can someone just give me a step-by-step procedure on what to do immediately after the installation?

Hardware:
PVR-250
GeForce 4 w/ Tv out
Pentium 4 2.26
MSI KS-845E motherboard
1 gig ram

Can anyone give me a step-by-step newbie-ized procedure for what to do following the first boot after the initial installation? Thanks.

ps: I have found some tips about installing my specific hardware around the forums and I have tried most of the tips but I just can't seem to get it to work, so telling me to go look at other posts won't do me much good unless you can point me to some specific ones that I might not have seen.

See if this helps any:

I would welcome any feedback. All your equipment should work just fine.

This doesn't include, however, how to configure mythbackend, and it sounds like you may have Knoppmyth installed correctly but haven't configured mythbackend. If you don't configure it correctly, the front end will just give you a blank screen. For configuring mythbackend I would recommend Jarod's HOWTO:

http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php#setupmythtv

as well as the original MythTV config docs:

http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-9.html

Thanks for the help, I have seen all of those pages before but noticed I missed a few pointers from the mythtv website's document.

How do I get back into the mythtv backend configuration? This is one of the things I'm struggling with right now. Thanks.

ah, thank you. Now the problem is that there is nothing listed under input devices (should be seeing the pvr-250, right?). How do I probe my computer to see which video my pvr is set on? (like video, video0, video1, etc). Thanks.

edit: When I go to the Input Connections option and press enter, the program kicks me back to kde and says the errors:
Couldn't open /dev/video to probe its inputs.
Couldn't open /dev/video to probe its inputs.
Couldn't open /dev/video to probe its inputs.
Couldn't open /dev/video0 to probe its inputs.
Couldn't open /dev/video1 to probe its inputs.
Couldn't open /dev/video1 to probe its inputs.

do you have a fairly new pvr250 MCE edition?

I'm pretty sure I do...I just bought it last week at circuit city. Is there something specific on the card itself that you would like me to check? Also, do I need to configure the ivtv drivers? Thanks.

edit: my AIM screenname is pstolpackr, so if you have AIM/AOL and wouldnt mind helping me out through that, it would be greatly appreciated. I could also post the conversation in this post so that others can see the resolution if we come to one.

well some of the newer pvr250 MCE editions are not detected correctly by the ivtv drivers, but MCE=media center edition, and is not usually sold in places like circuit city. If you have a remote with it then it is definately not the MCE.

try running lspci and see if the card is recognized and what version it says it is.

update: found the problem. It turns out that the motherboard of my comp doesnt perfectly fit together with the case, so when I screwed the pvr250 into place, the back end of the card lost contact with the pci slot, making the computer think that there was nothing there. Now that I have secured it into place, it detected it right away. thanks for the help though.
