Is there a way to use a "normal" (VGA) console instead of the framebuffer? I like to use the TV also for minor setup work, without having to carry the box around to the monitor. But the TV can't handle the framebuffer; as soon as Linux switches to the framebuffer during boot the TV goes blank.

Try changing vga=788 in lilo.conf to vga=normal. You can also ssh to the box and configure that way.

I tried that, rebooted and got normal VGA resolution. But then I got into a weird situation. As soon as the PVR-350 was set into ivtv-fb mode the screen looked frozen (no new stuff coming any more), but the TV suddenly showed a single white, blinking box on black background. It took me a while to realize that i saw a kind of black on black console. X did not start. So I was left on a black screen.
I had to blindly edit lilo.conf to change back to fb mode.

In messages I found the line:
> fb0: iTVC15 TV out framebuffer device

Booting with framebuffer assigns the TV out framebuffer to fb1. And fb0 is used for the monitor.

Any idea why that happens?
