Hi All, I've been running rock-solid R5F27 now for a while on a single PATA HDD. Now i've managed to free up a second one, and would like to use it in my myth box. My question is mostly about what would be the best approach when considering the imminent arrival of the next KM version. My question is as follows: Should i put the 2nd HDD (slave) in before i upgrade (ie. do it now), or should i wait till the next KM version comes out and whack it in just before i upgrade KM? I'm not so flash on things low-level with linux, i know enough to be dangerous. Any tips/hints appreciated. Cheers, Nathan [/b] |

To put it in now, the only way that would make sense would be to use LVM and then you are stuck using LVM in R5.5. I would guess that you would want to add the second hard drive after you have upgraded to R5.5, so that you can use "storage groups". Cliff |

Hi Cliff (aka the man that seems to answer all the linux questions), Sounds reasonable to me... but being a non-cliff, would i need to perform some linux voodoo to turn the new HDD into something that can be used by the storage groups? I guess i was wondering if the R5.5 installer would format/prepare the new HDD for me during the upgrade process? So jam it in just beore upgrading so the KM installer does all the /dev/hdx preparation? What you reckon? Cheers, Nathan |

You would need to format it using fdisk or cfdisk and create a filesystem on the disk. The http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=LvmHowTo and http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=StorageSpaces pages on the wiki contain directions fro running the flavors of fdisk and mkfs. thanks tjc, That is a great write-up, very easy to understand for those of us not so versed in linux. On the topic of great write-ups, i was looking at the R5.5 ACPI wakeup wiki entry. That is going to be invaluable also once the new KM is out. If you havent already, a link to both StorageGroups and ACPIWakeup wiki entries in your R5.5 hints thread would be a good move. Pet peeve. The Hints are already _full_ of links, but getting people to actually follow them to pages with the content is like trying to get them to stop talking on their mobile phone while driving. (BTW - Another pet peeve, it's not just as bad as drunk driving, study after study shows it's significantly _WORSE_. Too bad all the M.A.D.D. folks are too busy talking on theirs to get up in arms about it...).

Way off topic, but... There is an intersection 4-5 blocks from my house (<1km) on Alewife Brook Parkway where you can stand at any given morning or evening for ~5 minutes and watch multiple cars come up over the curb by up to a meter. We're not talking edge of the tire over the curb here, more like half the car. Inevitably the people who miss the corner like this are the ones too busy talking on their phone to pay attention or steer with their good hand. I've been tempted many times to stand just out of sight with a camera and take pictures for an hour or so (more than long enough to fill up a couple memory cards). It'd make a great news story, and might even embarrass the local LEOs into doing something about it.
Worse, it's not unique. There's another intersection nearly as bad at Cambridge and First Streets a few blocks from my office. You can regularly see people jumping back from the edge as some idiot careens around and over it, or, since mobile phones cause every bit as much brain damage to pedestrians as drivers, see some jabbering fool get stopped at or yanked back from the edge just before they obliviously walk in front of oncoming traffic. OBTW - Obligatory on-topic content. There are already links to both the StorageGroups and ACPIWakeup pages in the current draft of the hints. |
