Native SATA support has been built in since R5F27 at least I think... anyway, I installed R5.5 on a SATA drive no problems :)

Think carefully as you consider sizes. It's best to look at gigs/dollar in my opinion (unformatted gigs or formatted, it shouldn't matter for rank-order).

Western digital has a 2.0 TB drive now (WD20EADS). Newegg has them in stock for $300 shipped but you'll be paying a premium for that extra 0.5 TB over the existing 1.5 TB drives. You have the choice of many different options in 750 GB, 1.0 TB, and 1.5 TB drives. Using the price on the WD 2 gig and the current (31-jan-09) pricing on the 11th gen, 32 MB cache Seagate drives (7200.11 series), the sweet-spot in the curve seems to be 1.5 TB:

2.0 GB drive for $300 = 6.7 GB/dollar
1.5 GB drive for $130 = 11.5 GB/dollar
1.0 GB drive for $104 = 9.6 GB/dollar
750 GB drive for $80 = 9.4 GB/dollar

I bought 2 of the 1T drives 6 months ago. I installed Knoppmyth on one and about every 1 or 2 weeks I use ghost 4 linux and do a raw copy of of the Knoppmyth drive to the second drive. This not only gives me a backup, but I then put the backup drive in when ever I want to test a feature or muck with the system, without fear of hosing my good drive. When I know I have the procedure down then I'll do it on the good drive. Saves a lot of worry and has saved my bacon more than once!

Price isn't is big deal. I'm more interested in getting it installed on the hard drive. I did a bit more looking around and it looks like sata drives are manual install only. The process looks complicated so i'm still not sure. The instructions on the pamphlet also look pretty vague.

The instructions you are looking at are probably old. I did an auto install about 3 weeks ago using R5.5 on a fresh 750gb SATA HDD. It ran like a dream. the only thing was that my mobo bios was set in IDE mode for SATA drives (by default). I have no idea why (or why the setting exists at all), but switched it to the sata setting, and the install couldnt have been easier.

That's awesome Nathan. The auto install must work for your machine to even boot up at all. Thanks for the feedback.
