With all the help from this group I have had great success this weekend. I have everything running smooth so far. I have fixed having no videos in my folder, and fixed samba.

I have another issue however, no sound on videos. My sound is perfect on TV, and recordings of TV. When I import my videos however I get no sound.

Also is there a way to get arch linux gui, to work at all? Just wondering, would be nice to have a gui on my master backed, since it a pretty good machine.

Thanks, for all you help!

I would like to add I'm using a S/PDIF output. It is possible the out put of the videos an DVD's need to directed toward the S/PDIF output, this is where I know nothing.

I installed KnoppMyth R5.5 a few weeks ago and have worked out most issues. But I am having problems with my sound.

My config is:
Biostar MCP6P-M2 GeForce 6150 Socket AM2
Sound card on MB appears to be Realtek ALC662
Haupauge WinTV PVR-150 (remote not yet installed)

I am watching TV on my monitor. If I crank up mixer volumes I can just barely hear the sound. When I watch the recordings on a windows box the audio volume is there and at proper levels.

I don't seem to have my ALSA or driver working properly. Any ideas? I am a novice but holding my own.

So you can successfully record a show and play it back over S/PDIF but not the videos? How is the sound encoded on your videos? is it AC3 or DTS?

Did you enable S/PDIF pass through in the myth front end setup sections?

Did you adjust the s/pdif settings for mplayer per the R5.5 tips-hints?

Not knowing your KM release, hardware, or config. I am shooting in the dark.

which mixer volume? Have you run "alsamixer" from an xterm window? That would be one of my first checks as the volume may be set low there for your interface.

I assume too that you have upped the volume on your remote and in the set up pages on the front end.

What do you mean by that specifically?

After reading many different messages and test and fail results, I have it working.

Add this to the mplayer.conf

ao=alsa:device=iec958

For new users, /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf

cd /etc
cd / mplayer
su
password, as this needs root control.
nano mplayer.conf
add ao=alsa:device=iec958

Then Control-X, you must do this to save it. It worked for me no problem, I hope it works for you?

This is covered in the R5.5 hints and tips.

Yes I ran alsamixer and unmuted and raised volume on everything except mic. I also ran aumix and set everything as high as possible.
Then I ran speaker-test -Dplughw:0,0 -c2 (0 right after : is my card #) and I get noise in the correct speakers, but the volume sounds like the signal is not getting pre-amped. It is audile but very low.

My remote is not hookep up yet. I can't find any volume setup in frontend. Where is it?

I am assuming something is misconfigured in ALSA. Maybe that is a bad assumption. I built 2 boxes at once with the same hardware. The first box is running Ubuntu and I never checked my sound card because I'm running CLI only and using it for a server. I'll check that tomorrow night.

Thanks for the help by the way...

Please post the output of these commands:

Code:
$ aplay -l
and
Code:
$ aplay -L
and what are the settings for: Main Menu -> Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> General -> 3rd Page (Audio)

Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> General -> Audio (3rd screen in)

Note the Master & PCM Volumes.

I would also verify the volume on your remote though in theory Myth should default to some reasonable nominal value. Since you don't have a remote, you can use the keyboard which I think is the "]" key. Just double check at the myth site.

How are you listening to the sound. Speakers via "line-out"? S/PDIF? If you are using your sound card with analogue ports, you should double check that you have it in the correct port and have not accidentally put it in say the rear or centre channel ports. I normally use S/PDIF but I think the line out on most cards is the light green port.

You ask for the following output:
aplay -l

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC662 Analog [ALC662 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC662 Digital [ALC662 Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

and output from
aplay -L

default:CARD=NVidia
HDA NVidia, ALC662 Analog
Default Audio Device
front:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
HDA NVidia, ALC662 Analog
Front speakers
surround40:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
HDA NVidia, ALC662 Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
HDA NVidia, ALC662 Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
HDA NVidia, ALC662 Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
HDA NVidia, ALC662 Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
HDA NVidia, ALC662 Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

I still haven't checked my Ubuntu box yet but I think I have something funky in a config file somewhere...

Reply to christ...

I am listening to my sound thru speakers plugged into the speaker out port on my MB (green plug). I don't know what S/PDIF is. I don't see this nomenclature anywhere - sorry. Is is an output port? Yes, I tried the mic and line in plug to make sure the fool thing wasn't miswired or going to the wrong output. I still suspect I'm calling a wrong card value or some such in an ALSA confiig file. Where is this s*%^ going?

As root, enter
Code:
# alsamixer
on the commandline and ensure all your faders are turned up and not muted. Press Esc to exit and enter
Code:
# alsactl store
to save the settings.

Go to the above and for "Audio Output Device" enter:
Code:
ALSA:default:CARD=NVidia
You probably have to type that in manually. If that fails, try
Code:
ALSA:hw:0,0
or
Code:
ALSA:plughw:0,0

After you get your audio working, you can go back into alsamixer and mute things until you figure out what settings effect your sound output.

OK, here the latest: I found the Audio setup screen OK and volumes are all maxed out. I also have set all volumes in alsamixer to max and unmuted everything.

When I play with the Audio Output Device:
ALSA:default
ALSA:default:CARD=NVidia
ALSA:hw:0,0
ALSA:plughw:0,0
all work the same. This is, they play audio, but at a low volume level. I would estimate about a 1 or maybe 2 on a 1-10 scale

and
ALSA:Surround:5.1
ALSA:analog
JACK:output
do not produce any audio at all

Keep in mind (I think I said this before) the recordings have good audio - not on the myth server, but when I play them on a windows box elswhere on my network, so I know the audio is getting pulled from the card OK. The only problem seems to be my ability to get an amplified signal from my audio card. As I said before, I have the exact same hardware setup on mu Ubuntu file server, so I am going to try the sound out on that box later today. I see a number of folks having problems in Ubuntu with onboard audio. I'll let you know if it is a problem on the Ubuntu box as well.

OK, I think I'm getting close. Not there, but almost...

I edited my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base from this
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
to this
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
# options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

The volume is noticeably louder, but it is still relatively low. I would say it is the equivalent of a 3 setting on a 1-10 volume control. Considering I have everything pegged at max levels it should be blaring.

So now I'm wondering if I might benefit from installing ALSA 1.0.19 but I can't find a way to install it. Anybody know?
