Post subject:  X server

hello, this is my first linux and myth tv installation....now i know this is probably the biggest newb question, but when i start up knoppmyth it says

"I cannot start the X server (your graphical interface). Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?

so the next thing i do is press yes

It gives me a page of information, i belive that the important information on the screen is this
"(ee) vesa(0): vm86() syscall generated signal 4.
(ee) screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found"

any help you could give me i would appreciate

It sounds like you're trying to do tv-out... is that the case? What video card's TV-out are you trying to use?

i have just found this....ido have a nforce chipset and a nVidia card.....if this is the problem is there any Faq or page that will walk me through on how to do this

**NOTE**

If you have an nForce chipset or any nVidia card, before running the command below, you may want to edit /etc/X11/XFConfig-4 and add
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "TV" # This is only if attaching to a TV.**
For more options, please see: ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux ... README.txt

A sample XF86Config-4 for nVidia w/ tv out is in /etc/X11/

This is definitely the blind leading the blind, but I'd do the following:

First, start the install all over, and this time type "tv" at the very first boot: prompt. I have a feeling you didn't do this.

Once you get it so you can actually see things on TV, and you see the KnoppMyth desktop, left-click at the bottom of the screen and pick Xterm. Once the window is open, type the following:

Code:
su (then type your root password)
apt-get update
apt-get install nano
nano /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

You're in a simple text editor called nano. Use the commands at the bottom (control-v) to page down to the Section called "Monitor." Make sure TVStandard is correct (NTSC or PAL), and add the "ConnectedMonitor" "TV" line the instructions talk about. Then save (control-o) and quit (control-x). Then restart X by pressing control-alt-backspace. Hopefully all will be well after this.

Yep, since you've got an nForce board you'll have to install its drivers. Have you gotten to the step in the installation where you type install-nvidia.sh? It sounds like you haven't. I'm pretty sure this configures your networking too.

It could be the server is down or DNS isn't working. Can you "get" to another site? If so, it isn't your NIC.

Actually my bet is that the problem is the refresh frequencies. For NTSC (US) tv the vertical refresh has to be 60. This setting is in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.

not sure if you realize this , but in unix /etc/x11/xf86config-4 is different from /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

yup i tried it with the correct caps. i can get everything to work correctly, from the news to forms, the only things i cant get is for it to run off the tv(which will work when i figure out how to edit the text file) and the tv guide program

ok after spending most of the night with the box, i have gotten it on the tv screen. it will play dvd's get news feeds(in html format) and show me the weather.....the only things i can not get it to do is, view tv, give me sound, or get the tv guid listings( i belive this is becaue i do not have a user name and pass word).

i have noticed that when i boot up the system it says knoppix has not found a multimedia card, im gussing that is my tv capture card.

if you live in the US you have to go register with Zap2it and create a username and password and setup your channels. this is outlined in the 0.15 threads. you will have to search for it, because I'm lazy, and I can't remember the address where you sign up for data direct.
