Wow. What does lspci show? You're looking for a line something like this...
Code:

Well having an ATI based video card would definitely explain why the Nvidia drivers couldn't find any appropriate device... You need to use the ATI driver or one of the generic ones.

Do you remember which you were using before?

You know, Knoppmyth runs so well, for so long - I really don't remember.
I first installed Knoppmyth at least 4 years ago. The most recent thing I did with it (before the failed LinHES upgrade attempt) was to install the previous version, which I believe was 5.5 - and was amazed at how easy it was to install. I didn't have to tweak anything to get it to work. The first time I installed it, I had many issues with the TV output from the PVR-350 and the remote. The last messin' with it involved NO tweaking on my part.

That's a long way to answer your question - no, I don't know what I used last time.....

though, maybe this thread would shine a light? http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... rple+green

Sorry, I'm not a Linux guy and just know how to follow instructions...so I'm not sure what all that stuff means (or forgot since the Myth box has run so well for the last number of years, I don't really remember what I was doing back then)

Well, if you're using the PVR-350 for your output, then that is your answer. There should be notes in the R5.5 Hints related to setting it up.

Follow the link to the hints in my signature and search for "350" using your browsers page search function.

Got the TV out working for live TV and recorded programs.

But the TV out isn't working for the Myth menu, guide, etc....over the TV. It's sending it to the monitor (which I want to remove and just use the TV like before).

I didn't see how to get that working in the Hints/Tips so I looked on the wiki located here http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=HauppaugeThreeFiftyInstallation
and at step #5, see how to get TV out working for the PVR-350 (though it already does for watching live TV and recorded shows)

Following the directions, I get to step #2 and the file location (on Interwebs) is not valid.

But, continuing on, I come to step 5 and get this output:
Code:
root@mythtv:/tmp# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.monitor
cp: cannot stat `/etc/X11/XF86Config-4': No such file or directory
root@mythtv:/tmp# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.pvr350-tvout.sample /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.pvr350
cp: cannot stat `/etc/X11/XF86Config-4.pvr350-tvout.sample': No such file or directory
root@mythtv:/tmp# lspci | grep MPEG
00:10.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC15 MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)
root@mythtv:/tmp#

In other words....I'm in over my head. Don't know what to do.

If you have a backup from before your upgrade attempt you can extract your old X config file from that. See the examples in the "taking advantage of the new backup/restore" posting linked to in the R5.5 Hints.

It looks very generic to me. I don't know what to do. Can I use a copy of someone else's and adapt it for my box?

Does 5.5 include the ivtv driver? I found an old link (which I posted to years ago) that may offer help.
http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.p ... highlight=

I tried downloading that ivtv driver as explained in the thread, but the link is no longer valid (from 2005).

Is ivtv the problem? That link/form post seems relevant to the problem I'm seeing now.

If your previous install was really R5.5 you should be looking for /etc/X11/xorg.conf not XF86Config.

To see if the file is there run the following command as root:
Code:
root@black2:~# tar ztvf /myth/backup/savedfiles.tar.gz ./etc/X11/xorg.conf
-rw-r--r-- root/root      4695 2009-07-19 10:52 ./etc/X11/xorg.conf

The results should look something like in the example above. Alternately you can look for everything with that base name using:
Code:
root@black2:~# tar ztvf /myth/backup/savedfiles.tar.gz | grep './etc/X11/xorg.conf'
-rw-r--r-- root/root         4659 2008-05-31 17:56 ./etc/X11/xorg.conf.in
-rw-r--r-- root/root        13400 2006-12-13 20:53 ./etc/X11/xorg.conf.nvidia.tv.out.sample
-rw-r--r-- root/root         4695 2009-07-19 10:52 ./etc/X11/xorg.conf
-rw-r--r-- root/root        13344 2009-08-15 16:23 ./etc/X11/xorg.conf.1st

If you have other older (numbered) backup files you can just use those names in the commands. For example:
Code:
root@black2:~# tar ztvf /myth/backup/savedfiles.tar.gz.1 './etc/X11/xorg.conf'
-rw-r--r-- root/root      4691 2009-07-18 15:49 ./etc/X11/xorg.conf

Oh and the ivtv driver should be in use here to for output via the PVR-350, but the version in R5.5 is already a good one that you supposedly had working before.

I was really PRETTY sure I upgraded to 5.5 a while ago. But it was some time ago and my memory is not what it used to be.
Code:
root@mythtv:/home/roger# tar ztvf /myth/backup/savedfiles.tar.gz ./etc/X11/xorg.conf
tar: /myth/backup/savedfiles.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: ./etc/X11/xorg.conf: Not found in archive
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
root@mythtv:/home/roger#
and
Code:
root@mythtv:/home/roger# tar ztvf /myth/backup/savedfiles.tar.gz | grep './etc/X11/xorg.conf'
tar: /myth/backup/savedfiles.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
and
Code:
root@mythtv:/home/roger# tar ztvf /myth/backup/savedfiles.tar.gz.1 './etc/X11/xorg.conf'
tar: /myth/backup/savedfiles.tar.gz.1: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: ./etc/X11/xorg.conf: Not found in archive
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
root@mythtv:/home/roger#

but, I did this and find:
Code:
root@mythtv:/home/roger# find / | grep /X11/xorg.conf
/myth/backup/etc/X11/xorg.conf.in
/myth/backup/etc/X11/xorg.conf.nvidia.tv.out.sample
/myth/backup/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/myth/backup/etc/X11/xorg.conf.pre350
/myth/backup/etc/X11/xorg.conf.350
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.nvidia.tv.out.sample
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.350
root@mythtv:/home/roger#

So I did a lspci and find my PVR-350 has a bus ID of 00:10.0
Code:
00:10.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC15 MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)
also tried
Code:
BusID "PCI:0:10:0"
but still the same. But am guessing on what to put there, not sure if it's binary, hex, decimal, or if it even matters.

so I changed the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to reflect that in the PVR-350 section, rebooted and tried it again. Same result. Only TV output on watching live or recorded shows, not the GUI interface.

still stumped.

Well the first three errors indicate that you don't even have a backup file. What does this show:
Code:
ls -al /myth/backup

If you see nothing, you either never made one or managed to blow it away somehow.. If you see savedfiles.tar.bz2 then you've got a earlier but compatible type of backup. If you see something else you may have a REALLY old style backup.

At this point I'm betting on the first option.

A few things:
- If your recordings are really important to you, you may want to get a local guru to fix it for you or at least make sector level copies (clonezilla works and has this as an option) of all the hard disks before touching them more so you have something to fall back on if you hose it up more.
- My recollection is that storage groups did not come around until R5.5
- The output of the fdisk -l showed that two of your hard disks had no partition table. I would verify that I actually had all my recordings before I went a long way to get R5.5 back with no recordings. Actually play a couple seconds of a recording on each page in Watch Recordings, even if you have to use a computer monitor because it can show up Watch Recordings but the actual media file can be gone.
- As I recall, sfdisk has a rescue partition option that will search for a partition. A better option if you know that you used these disks and you know exactly how they were partitioned (like they had only one partition and it was ext3) is to just repartition them the way they were before. cfdisk is easy to use. partitioning under Linux is non-destructive. formatting under Linux is destructive.
- I checked a tar backup I made of an R5.5 PVR-350 system and the xorg.conf was 0 bytes. I checked a "savedfiles.tar.gz" that MythTV made when I did a Backup Knoppmyth from inside the backend's frontend. It was also 0 bytes. I suppose that it is possible that this file was somehow locked but I doubt it. I recall that "it uses defaults" if there is no xorg.conf?
- I recall that if you take out the video card, it forces all the output onto the PVR-350. Try that. Power off and take out your ATI card and make sure that any VGA card built into the motherboard is disabled in the BIOS. See if that puts all your output on the TV.
- One of the several MythTV systems that I maintain for several family households is R5.5 with a PVR-350 so I have access to a working system 15 miles away that has no remotely accessible internet. I can get you some files if you find that your recordings are intact.

I don't come here very often right now, so email "vzmith at earthlink dot net" or call 770-883-4507 if I don't seem to be answering posts or PM's.

Good Luck,
Cliff

You are correct, I did have a storage group and had movies on 3 hard drives. I no longer have 2 of the drives working....and movies are gone. They don't show up in the recorded programs list anymore. I haven't taken the drives out and put them in a different computer to see if they're still on them. It would be really nice to get it all working as it was before with movies on all 3 drives accessible again, plus all the output coming over the TV, not the monitor.

I can play movies that show up on the list and they do actually play on the TV, not on the monitor. I can record new shows onto the drive and they are played back on the TV. I can watch live TV and it shows up on the TV. I just don't get the menu in myth to show up on the TV, only the monitor.

I'll try taking out the video card and see what happens, maybe this weekend will try it.

BTW, When trying to watch the movies over my home network on another PC (my myth box doesn't have enough power to really do this, but I can try it, anyway) - Windows Media Player asks me for a username/password. None of the ones on the myth box work...not my personal one when upgrading Myth (my name), nor myth, nor root -
Is there somewhere I need to set this?
