Post subject: | Minor Problems installing knoppMyth. |
I installed R4V4 and found the following few problems with the install. 1) When I run apt-get update I get Failed to fetch http://marillat.free.fr/dists/unstable/ ... ackages.gz Could not resolve 'marillat.free.fr' I didn't think much of that I have 3 sets of debian mirror because of that problem from time to time. So I run apt-get upgrade and found several missing depences most likely coming from marillat.free.fr so after downloading 400 Files it proceded to destory my X. So I rebooted then X would load but the console wouldn't come up and niether would the myth frontend. It is the 2nd step I do in a new install so I simple reinstalled KnoppMyth. 2) This time I noticed the setting of the time failed on the bootup screen. It wouldn't change the Time Zone for any reason. I tried 3 Times. I know Linux enfoe I figuired I would update that after install. After restarting the PC and running the install sript it asked me again this time it took the change but my direct data download was off by 3 Hours because of the timezone problem. I mythfilldatabase --refreshtoday and now that data is right for today and tommorow but next week was still off. I dumped all the data from mysql using: mysql -u root mythconverg mysql> delete from program and redownloaded and appers to be working fine now. 3) ntpdate is installed but doesn't contain any server information. You should at least put pool.ntp.org so that it will pull from somewhere that is the default debian file now. So my system wouldn't sync with an NTP servers off by to many seconds. So unless I reinstalled ntpdate with the default config file or knew to update /etc/default/ntpdate I would never have gotten ntp/ntpdate to fix and keep my time up to date. Now I have a system that apears to be working altought I think my sound card might not be working right but that is fine I knew that might be a problem. Just some sugestions to improve R4V5. Thanks Robert |

1) that site has moved. its nirim.net or something now, if you search you will find where I posted the new sources line. If you will notice in the documentation it says the only thing that is not recommended is apt-get upgrade. that is specifically because it will kill the system, because of all the goofy mirrors that it carries over from knoppix. Hopefully this will be cleaned up conciderably in the next version. 2) this has been discussed several times as well. the first time that script runs you are still running off of the cd and therefore read only, which is why it fails. 3) this has been discussed too. I personally always have to turn that off anyways, cause the networks don't use the same time as everyone else. |

I would sugest that it at least gets listed. And I understand the mirrors change but that is the most recent release it should be on the front page of the install sections. Not listed in the docs that I read it might be an idea for the furture. Xsecrets wrote: 3) this has been discussed too. I agree they don't but it is usally the same everyday. The start time is off by the same amount everyday. If you do include ntpdate then atleast document that it broken by default and how to fix if you do want to use it. I bring the issues up as it is a great install and just givening feedback to try and improve the program. Robert |
