Post subject:  How to install to a directory

How do I install Knoppmyth to a specific directory on an existing Linux installation? I'm experimenting with network booting from a completely disk-less system.

I don't have enough hard drives to install Knoppmyth onto a dummy drive and then transfer it over manually.

Thanks,
Frank

short answer you don't.

if you are looking for network boot unless it's of utmost importance you might want to just wait for R5.

erm... ok

...meanwhile I ended up getting it working without too much fuss. But thanks for your opinion anyways. Here were the basic steps for those wondering:

- install to a separate partition on the hard drive where the existing distribution already resides (in this case, SLES 9.0). LILO will overwrite the original boot-loader, but that's no big deal.

- boot into Knoppmyth and setup as required (SLES happens to be on identical hardware I use for the Knoppmyth box)

- use a simple live linux CD (Knoppix, SuSE, Gentoo, etc.) to restore the original boot loader

- boot into the original OS, mount the Knoppmyth partition into the filesystem

- create basic initrd and pxeboot arrangement for network boot

voila, works perfectly. Most of the system is mounted read-only, and then the /myth directory is brought in via NFS from the network-loaded Knoppmyth (so /myth can be mounted read/write). For shutting down, I made sure NFS was turned off only AFTER mythbackend and mysql, so no database corruption occurs.
