Post subject: | mythfrontend not installed on autoinstall with R4v5 |
Something very odd is happening with R4v5. First of all, the md5 of the iso I burned was correct, 14cb8c8c307cf45ce231a2f589e3537a. I selected auto-install, everything seemed fine. I can now boot from my harddrive and everything seems all right. I tried to install-i586-x, but dpkg couldn't find the proper deb on my drive. I had installed R4v4 and had problems, so I thought I might as well auto-install R4v5 since it was out. Oh, to cover the subject, mythtv-setup, mythfrontend, mythfilldatabase, et al weren't on the drive once it was installed. This oddity led me to deeper investigation. My theory is that doing this doesn't work. I don't know why as of yet. To verify this I deleted the partition table on my hard drive and I am using Knoppix to 'dd' to throw some zeros on the drive. That should kill any lingering spirits. If any devs are out there, could we please remove the option to change your timezone when running off the CD during auto-install? It doesn't seem to work and is discouraging to users. More as it happens. |

Looking at the announcement page http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2485 are we supposed to get the debs by hand? I'll give that a shot. Seems like a shame tho. Do the devs need help? |

If you are using R4V5 full no you do not need to get the deb's by hand. that is for people with a working install that do not want to do another full install, or download a full iso. As forthe timezone thing I'm sure this is being looked at for R5 as the entire installation program is being rewritten GUI. |

No, you don't need to get the debs by hand if you are installing R4V5. You also don't need to run any of the scripts by hand after an install. After KnoppMyth is installed and teh system reboots, you're asked for the root password. Once given, our scipts take care of setting things up. The scipt also ask what you'd like to install, 586, 686, LIRC, etc. If you're not seeing this, you're going too fast or simply not reading. Help in what way? |

No, I know that the script asks what you'd like to install. Old (?) install instructions recommended doing it by hand. Actually, it would be nice if it asked if you wanted to install nvidia drivers as well, but that cannot be done from X. The user must also set their video card's driver to "nvidia" by hand in XF86Config. It would be nice if the install-nvidia.sh script did this for them. That would mean parsing the file, a dirty hack should work most of the time. If not, we could check for the string 'nvidia' in XF86Config at boot time and add a reminder if they didn't do it yet. I figure we could use xmessage or just add it to their .bashrc, or whatever it is for the shell you use. My first problem was that my card was not recognized. My tuner card is a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-350 Model 990. My current state of affairs is that I now seem to get all of the channels, but the reception is miserable. To be more specific, the audio is good but the video is a nightmare. I believe that my last setup was to set my tuner as -1 in /etc/modules/mythtv/ivtv. Using the commonly recommended 39 resulted in only a very few channels (up in the 60's) with terrible quality. Basically, I want to get my tuner working as well under Linux as it does under Windows (crystal clear picture). I want future users of KnoppMyth to have an easier time than I did, and if that means writing some code or documentation I'm up for it. I would also like TV out, but I'd be perfectly happy if my nVidia card provided TV out. I'd love to be able to use KDE or at least a better window manager than, what is it, twm? Perhaps a boot time option as in Knoppix. So, in summation, I want help making my system work better. I'm willing to help make the whole system better, I just need to know how. There aren't any requests for help on this site. I know I could unpack the iso and treat it like remastering Knoppix, but those changes wouldn't be easy to merge back into the main dev tree. |

actually the nvidia install script does change the XF86Config-4 file for you. The window manager is changing for R5 It is going to be fluxbox, I never seeing it going to kde or gnome, as the point of this distro is to be a stb and we don't want to waste the resources. I'm sure anything you can contribute would be appreciated, but at this point lots of stuff is in a state of flux. If you really want to help you might try going into the irc channel and getting in on at least the R5 beta when it comes out. |

FVWM, KnoppMyth will never ship with KDE or a full blown desktop. KnoppMyth is meant to be a set-top box, I don't see the point in using KDE (which I use on my regular workstation) on a set-top box. R5 will be built from Debian Sid, so one will be able to install KDE. All one has to do to install the driver is run the script, the script does modify XF86Config-4 with "nvidia". Future releases will have a newer version of IVTV, so autodetecting of install PVR-x50 cards should be automatic. Code and documentation help would be appreciate, please contact me offline. |
