I'm a total newbie when it comes to linux so please assume that you'll have to "spell out" and directions.

Here's my situation:

I'm just playing around with KnoppMyth to see if I can make some use of an old Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop. I'm not really interested in the PVR functions of myth, but it would be nice to experiment with the other features.

I have successfully done the "Auto Install" and browsed the myth screens, but I'm stuck getting my Lucent Orinoco Wirelss Silver PCMCIA card to work.

I notice at bootup that there is some mention of Orinoco so I'm assuming that some part of the system recognizes it. What do I need to do to access the card to put in the settings and get my internet connection to work (Its a gateway'd system tied to a cable modem using DHCP)? Downloading extra packages is a bit problematic since I can't access the internet from that PC. But I guess I could download stuff on another PC and burn it to CD or put on a floppy IF someone can tell me how to copy the files from the CD to the right place in LINUX. Is it the same as the DOS "Copy" command?

I've noticed that many times directions say "edit this file XYZ and change something" what command do I use to do this?

Compiling is also foreign to me under LINUX (I do know how to do this under Windows and that it turns source code into a binary executable). If I need to do this, please let me know how. Thanks so much for your help.

If your using a CardBus adapter (PCI to PCMCIA) then you need to load the modules for that first. If you haven't tried "kudzu" as root, see if that finds anything new. If "iwconfig" does not show any wireless cards then check "lsmod" for "orinoco", "orinoco_cs", "hermes" and any other pcmcia drivers. Check "dmesg" for information on good and bad items in your system.

Once you card is found you will need to configure it with "iwconfig" and "ifconfig"..see the man pages for details.

good luck.
