After about 15 reinstalls of both r4v4 and r4v5 I am starting to see a bit of a consistency in my problems.

I am trying to get things going with this:
Shuttle ST61G4 (onboard ATI graphics, nic, audio...)
Hauppauge PVR-250 (PAL version) + the standard remote
Celeron 2.2Ghz
Maxtor 60GB HD
512MB RAM

I read in a thread in this forum that my onboard nic can cause problems, which I can only confirm. It works great once the system boots but I need to keep the cable unplugged during startup (and then run netcardconfig).

I have learnd to stay away from "the blank screen of death". Also thanks to this forum.

Once I had those things under control I could start to look at the rest. What is happening is that once installed and the configs start I have most things working. No audio but the remote works, I can view tuner static and set thing up to look good on a TV (mb TV out). Problem is that once configured and rebooted, the system no longer loads my PVR-250 (viewing TV causes eternal loop) or the remote.

Looking at the list of modules for the kernel I find no lirc.
modprobe can get it installed but not working (reboot and its gone)

I don't really know how much I can force these modules to load? I just have some general experience playing with webservers in Linux. Point me in the right directon here, please.

One install did get to keep the remote but that install lost the mouse which was no good.

Apart from the NIC. Is there any other part of my system that are obviously incompatible? I followed some tips to turn off a few BIOS features (APIC or something like that... lost the thread). I cant locate a setting to switch my NIC off in the BIOS, unfortunately.

I have spent the past few days searching this forum and the wiki but have not found a thread that rings true for my problem. If there is such a thread or any ideas as to where I should start... setp right up! :D

great site, and great project BTW

well not sure what your system has, but ati igp is highly incompatible with knoppmyth. search for pundit-r to see some of the issues, and any ati video card is not good there is tons of stuff on this forum about that.

Looks like I should have gotten an nforce based Shuttle instead.

Funny that all is well at first boot (when the config autoruns), even the nic is working and not crashing the boot sequence. Then when all is configured.. its bye bye.

I'll make a try using a graphics card (whatever I can find lying around at work) and see what happens.
