Post subject: | Some questions for new install |
Hi. I just installed KnoppMyth the first time yesterday. Got it running after some hazzle with the kernel freezing when I only had an USB keyboard. With PS2 it's fine. Anyway I think I wrecked my install with some filesystemcrashes. Something went wrong i the manual install and it didn't mount /cache and /myth. I've had several serious crashes/freezes when trying to watch TV. I read somewhere that a "apt-get upgrade" might work. Does it? I did, and it seemed to work. Unsure if this is the cause of my problems or filesystem coruption. The first I'll do after reinstalling: - Get rid of lilo and install grub! - Compile my own kernel. Preferably a 2.6 kernel. The questions are: Will a 2.6 kernel work? Are there special patches needed for the distro? Will apt-get upgrade work? How about apt-get dist-upgrade? Regards Stian H. Larssen PS. Very nice distro. This is the first time I've been able to watch TV at all with MythTV. Great work! |

well if you read something it probably went like this apt-get upgrade is highly discouraged, and will most likely completely bork the system, but it might work. what's wrong with lilo? why recompile the kernel? and yes you will have to recompile lirc, and ivtv at least to get a new kernel to work, and yes lirc has big problems compiling on 2.6 last I heard you have to go to cvs to get a version that will. |

I can't find the thread about it but it stated that R4V5 is more like Debian Sid. So it might work now, though he was uncertain. Anyone tried it with sucess? Nothing wrong with lilo. But if I start tinkering with kernels and stuff, I like the way grub works. I like the command line in grub if my boot doesn't work straight away. The system have been unstable on my box. Specially freezing when viewing live TV. So I thougt 2.6 might work better. Can always go back to the old. Thanks for your answers. Anyone else have any suggestions? Regards Stian H. Larssen |

actually R5 which is not released yet will be based more on Sid and apt-get upgrade should work fine. And it will also come with a 2.6 kernel. But that is different from the latest release R4V5. |

Sorry. Was a bit uncertain where I should put it. Feel free to move it to another category. |
